How to make magnolias bloom abundantly and grow into strong trees

The best time to plant magnolias is 10 days before bud break in early spring or 10 days before leaf expansion. When planting, first choose a spot that is sheltered from wind, sunny, with fertile, loose soil and good drainage, then apply plenty of well-rotted organic fertilizer. Be careful not to damage the roots. After planting, fill in the soil and press it firm, then water thoroughly. The main aftercare points after planting are:

①Watering. Magnolias have fleshy roots. When grown in the open ground, no watering is needed after transplanting and establishment. Potted magnolias need the soil kept slightly moist during the growth and flowering period. After early autumn, watering should be reduced. In winter, generally no watering is needed; just water a little when the soil becomes too dry.

②Fertilizing. Generally, well-rotted organic fertilizer needs to be applied 2 times during the growing period, that is, once in early spring and once between May and June. Newly planted magnolias do not need fertilizing; wait until after leaf fall in autumn or early spring of the 2nd year to fertilize.

③Pruning. Magnolias have few branches, and their wounds heal poorly, so generally no pruning is needed. Just after the flowers fade, prune away dead branches, diseased and pest-infested branches, and leggy branches.
