When is the blooming period of orchids?

There are many varieties of orchids, so their blooming periods differ. Cymbidium goeringii (spring orchid) is a common variety, blooming from January to March with a light fragrance. Cymbidium sinense (Chinese cymbidium) blooms from December to February of the following year. Cymbidium ensifolium (four-season orchid) has very poor cold resistance and usually blooms from May to October. Cymbidium kanran (cold orchid) blooms from May to December.

1. Spring orchid blooming period: January to March

It is closely related to its variety, and the blooming time of each variety varies greatly. For example, the common Cymbidium goeringii (spring orchid) variety usually blooms only from January to March, with a light fragrance and high ornamental value, so it is very popular in daily life. During cultivation, as long as it is managed properly, it will bloom from January to March.

2. Chinese cymbidium blooming period: December to February

The blooming period of Cymbidium sinense (Chinese cymbidium) is from December to February of the following year. Among orchid varieties, Cymbidium sinense has relatively strong cold resistance, and it likes shady environments, so it usually blooms in winter. Therefore, when cultivating it in winter, a certain amount of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer needs to be applied, which can replenish the nutrients consumed by Cymbidium sinense.

3. Four-season orchid blooming period: May to October

The blooming period of Cymbidium ensifolium (four-season orchid) is also different from the varieties above. It usually blooms from May to October each year, and generally reaches its peak blooming period in mid-July. Its cold resistance is relatively poor, so when cultivating it in winter, it needs to be moved indoors and kept at a constant temperature of 20°C so that Cymbidium ensifolium can grow better.

4. Cold orchid blooming period: May to December

The blooming period of Cymbidium kanran (cold orchid) is from May to December. This variety also has relatively strong cold resistance and will not enter dormancy in winter. Although Cymbidium kanran has relatively strong cold resistance, the temperature must not drop below zero, otherwise it will affect the differentiation and formation of flower buds, and the blooming period will be delayed.
