Coleus cultivation methods and precautions

Coleus has extremely high ornamental value and is often used to create patterns in flower beds, venues and theaters. It is also highly adaptable and relatively easy to grow, and many people keep it as a potted plant at home. So how should coleus be grown? What should be noted? Let's find out together.

I. Cultivation methods

1. Soil

Coleus is highly adaptable to soil and can tolerate various types of soil, growing normally in both acidic and alkaline soils. However, the most suitable soil for it is loose, fertile, well-drained acidic soil rich in humus, so garden soil and leaf mold are the most suitable.

2. Light

Because the main ornamental value of coleus comes from its leaves, bright leaf color means high ornamental value, whereas dull leaf color causes the ornamental value to drop sharply. To keep its leaves brightly colored, sufficient light is needed. In summer, direct sunlight should be avoided and appropriate shading is needed, but it should not be too deeply shaded either.

3. Temperature

Coleus likes a warm environment, with a suitable growing temperature of 18-25°C. In winter, the temperature should be kept above 10°C; if the temperature is too low, its leaves will turn yellow, and below 5°C it may directly freeze the plant to death.

4. Watering and fertilizing

Coleus has relatively high water requirements; lack of water will cause slow growth and dull, lusterless leaves. When watering, be sure to do so in appropriate amounts, keeping the soil moist. As for fertilizer, coleus does not need very much, but it is still important to ensure the nutrients needed for its growth. Therefore, when planting, apply base fertilizer at the bottom, and during the growing season apply a dilute nitrogen fertilizer once a month to promote leaf growth.

II. Precautions

Although coleus prefers a moist environment, never overwater it. The principle is that no water should accumulate in the pot, and do not continue watering while the soil is still moist; the second watering should wait until the soil has dried. Coleus has relatively poor cold tolerance and will be frostbitten if the temperature drops below 5°C. Therefore, in winter and spring, be sure to pay attention to temperature changes and take insulation measures early, such as moving it indoors for care or covering it with a plastic bag.
