What month does the autumn zephyrlily bloom? What month is the autumn zephyrlily flowering season?

Zephyranthes candida, also known as jade curtain and autumn zephyrlily, is a perennial herbaceous plant with an ovate bulb about 2.5 cm in diameter, featuring a distinct neck 2.5-5 cm long. The leaves are narrowly linear, thick and fleshy, bright green, 20-30 cm long and 2-4 mm wide. So what month does the autumn zephyrlily bloom? What month is the autumn zephyrlily flowering season?

According to experienced autumn zephyrlily growers, the flowering season of the autumn zephyrlily is between July and September. From blooming to fading: each flower can last about 2-4 days, and if exposed to too much direct sunlight, it may last only 1 day.

Species distribution

Zephyranthes candida is native to South America and is distributed in warm regions. It has been introduced and cultivated in Central China, East China, South China, Southwest China and other areas of China.

Growth habits

Zephyranthes candida prefers fertile soil and full sunlight, tolerates partial shade and low humidity, and does best in fertile, slightly clayey soil with good drainage. It is relatively cold-tolerant and can remain evergreen in the Yangtze River basin, and can survive for a fairly long time below 0°C. At around -10°C, it will not freeze in a short period, but may freeze to death if exposed for a longer time. Zephyranthes candida readily forms natural bulb offsets and is easy to propagate by division; cultivation requires attention to proper cold protection in winter.

Cultivation techniques

Field management

Temperature

Zephyranthes candida likes a warm climate, but high summer temperatures and muggy heat (above 35°C with relative air humidity above 80%) are unfavorable for its growth; it has strict temperature requirements in winter, stopping growth when the ambient temperature falls below 10°C, and cannot overwinter safely when frost occurs.

Water and fertilizer

Zephyranthes candida likes full sunlight but can also tolerate partial shade; it requires a warm and moist environment and is suited to sandy loam rich in humus with good drainage. When planting in the ground, apply sufficient base fertilizer, keep the soil moist during the growing period, and apply a dilute cake fertilizer solution 2-3 times a year to achieve good growth and abundant flowering. When growing in pots, choose a loose, fertile, well-drained potting mix, which can be made by mixing leaf mold or peat soil, garden soil and river sand evenly. During the growing period, water generously and keep the potting soil moist often, but do not let it become waterlogged. In dry weather, also spray water on the leaves frequently to increase air humidity, otherwise the leaf tips tend to turn yellow and wither. In the vigorous growing season, apply a dilute liquid fertilizer once every half month.

Pest and disease control

The main problems harming Zephyranthes candida are pests, such as the autumn zephyrlily noctuid moth, which mainly harms Zephyranthes candida, amaryllis, lycoris and other plants, and is a minor pest. In severe cases, the autumn zephyrlily noctuid moth can eat all the aboveground stems of Zephyranthes candida. Although after the stems and leaves are fed on by this pest, the aboveground part can still sprout and grow, so it does not cause the death of Zephyranthes candida, its growth vigor is noticeably weakened.

Control methods

In winter or early spring, plow the soil and dig out overwintering pupae to reduce the pest population base; when larvae occur, spray with 1500x MiMan, 1500x Lorsban or 800x phoxim emulsifiable concentrate, choosing to spray in the morning or evening when the larvae come out to be active (feed), for a relatively good control effect.
