What to do when a clivia's flower bud emerges from the center of the leaf rosette

Clivia is a very beautiful and elegant perennial herbaceous plant, with many thick, emerald-green leaves. Kept at home, it stays green all year round just like spider plants and pothos, and its flowers are quite bright and lovely when it blooms.

However, a large number of friends fail to grow potted clivia well. In fact, as long as the potting soil is mixed well, using decomposed pine needle soil or leaf mold, and soil fertilizer fermented from leaves and pine bark, it will be looser and more breathable, which is better for the growth of the clivia's roots. Only with good soil can the clivia's roots grow well-developed and thick, and only then will its leaves grow especially thick and plump, one after another large and beautiful.

When a clivia's flower bud emerges from the center of the leaf rosette, that is, the condition known as "bud clamping", it is generally caused by these reasons, and the solutions are as follows:

1. The potting soil is not fertile enough

Lack of nutrients: the potted clivia at home has not had its soil or pot changed for several years, the soil is especially poor and compacted, and there are not enough nutrients, so the flower gets clamped and cannot open. Wait until the weather turns cool in autumn, then replace the potting soil for it, and it will grow better.

2. Insufficient light and not enough temperature

Although clivia fears strong sun exposure, and its leaves easily get sunburn spots when exposed, it still cannot be kept in a corner of the home all the time, in a place where it never gets even a bit of indirect light all year round. It should be kept in a ventilated, bright place with indirect light. In addition, if the temperature is too low in winter, the flowers bloom slowly, which can also cause bud clamping; simply raising the temperature will help.

3. If bud clamping occurs, you can also gently cut it open a little with a small knife, then tie the leaves on both sides together with string, to encourage its flower buds and flower scapes to emerge smoothly and bloom successfully.
