What causes ducklings to peck at feathers?

What is going on when ducklings peck at feathers

Feather pecking in ducks is a rather serious matter; it does not appear for no reason. If you notice this problem, it is best to deal with it promptly, because it indicates a fairly significant underlying issue. Let us take a look below at what causes it to happen.

1. Poor environmental conditions

This is a major cause, and it is also one of the more common ones. For example, high temperatures, excessive stocking density, and too much harmful gas indoors can all lead to this situation, and it generally occurs in groups, posing a relatively large threat. In daily life people may not pay much attention to environmental issues, but their effect on feather pecking in ducklings is present at all times. Be sure to pay more attention to this issue day to day to reduce the occurrence of feather pecking, so that the ducklings can quickly get through this fragile stage.

2. Nutritional deficiency

Ducks are omnivorous poultry; they eat vegetables, small fish and shrimp, and the like. In fact, this is just to supplement the various trace elements they need. When these elements are insufficient or the ducklings often do not get enough to eat, they will lose feathers, and a lack of trace elements in particular is especially likely to cause this situation. When losing feathers, the ducklings will peck at the feathers because it makes them uncomfortable. This is why people often see ducks that are thin yet still pecking at feathers. In daily care, feed formulation should be done well, trying to ensure the nutritional needs of the ducklings in all respects.

3. External stimuli

Ducks cannot be subjected to frequent stress. The stress here refers to both physical factors and pathogen factors. Physical stress refers to ducklings being suddenly startled, which makes them frightened and uneasy, and then some ducks will peck at feathers. The pathogen aspect refers to some duck houses having many pathogens that are not cleaned up in time. Living in such an environment for a long time, the ducks will gradually feel itchy and then peck at feathers to make themselves a bit more comfortable. But the more they damage the wounds, the more pathogens there are, and the more frequently they peck at feathers. This is the cause of feather pecking brought on by external stimuli.

4. Parasites

This one, I believe, needs no further explanation; quite a few cases of ducks pecking at feathers are actually due to this cause. Some parasites hide on the ducks' bodies, and when they suck nutrients they make the ducks feel itchy, which then triggers feather-pecking behavior. Feather pecking caused by this reason is relatively mild, but in severe cases it will make the ducks peck directly at flesh, leaving them covered in wounds. When doing routine disinfection, remember also to deworm. Parasites on ducklings actually spread very quickly, and combined with the relatively dense grouping of ducklings, losses can easily occur.

If you find that ducklings are showing this problem, do not ignore it. It is best to carefully check what is going on and see exactly what is causing it. This way you can both solve the problem promptly.
