How to Grow the Large-Flowered Clivia

The large-flowered clivia (Clivia miniata) has a long blooming period and high ornamental value, making it an important holiday flower. It is easy to find in flower shops, and growing one at home has its own special charm. Let's learn together how to grow the large-flowered clivia.

1. Soil

The large-flowered clivia has a fairly long root system, so a relatively deep soil layer should be used. Semi-decomposed leaf mold is the best growing medium, and peat or granular soil can be added as appropriate and mixed with a base fertilizer.

2. Watering

During the peak growing season and the blooming period, the plant needs a lot of water. Water thoroughly and generously, but do not let water accumulate in the pot, which would cause root rot. Do not water until the soil is dry, and when you do water, water thoroughly; a light sprinkling is very harmful to the roots.

3. Temperature

A temperature range of 20-25°C is most suitable for the plant's growth. To overwinter safely, keep the temperature above 4°C, otherwise cold damage will occur. In hot weather, keep it below 35°C, or the plant will go dormant and stop growing.

4. Light

The large-flowered clivia does not demand much light; as long as it receives normal light of a reasonably suitable intensity, the duration can be a little longer or shorter without mattering. If you want to enhance its ornamental value, it is recommended to give it more indirect light.

5. Fertilizing

Generally, applying a decomposed liquid fertilizer once a month is enough. A nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer can be used after dilution, but during the blooming period the amount of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer should be controlled to avoid excessive leaf and stem growth that prevents flowering.
