What to Do When the Leaf Core of a New Orchid Shoot Rots

Causes of leaf core rot in new orchid shoots:

①Abnormal growth: mainly caused by an imbalanced ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in the fertilizer applied, a lack of trace elements, and the use of too many growth promoters, which leads to soft, flaccid leaf stalks that turn brown and rot.

②Improper use of water, fertilizer and pesticides: mainly caused by using too large an amount when watering, fertilizing or spraying pesticides, doing so at an unsuitable time, or failing to dry the plant promptly after the operation, resulting in scorching of the leaf base and subsequent rot.

③Invasion by pathogenic bacteria: mainly caused by black rot, which turns the leaf sheath of the new shoot from yellow to black and can even cause the leaf core to rot.

④External force damage: rot caused by external force injuring the leaf base or the heart leaf.

Control methods for leaf core rot in new orchid shoots: apply fertilizer reasonably; when watering, fertilizing or spraying, do not use too much at a time and do not do it too late, so that the heart leaf dries promptly; do not use too much force when removing discarded leaves and wiping the leaves; once an orchid is attacked by pathogenic bacteria, promptly spray it with a 700-1000 times dilution of Tuijunling, carbendazim, Dikesong or streptomycin, or a 3000 times dilution of chloramphenicol and penicillin.
