How to Plant Clivia Seeds? A Detailed Guide to Clivia Planting Methods

Before sowing Clivia, the seeds need to be soaked first. Place the seeds in warm water at 30-35°C and soak for 20-30 minutes, then take them out and air-dry for 1-2 hours. Prepare the potting soil with leaf mold mixed with fine sand, or use wood shavings or sawdust as the substrate. Plant the seeds with the small eye facing down, then cover with 2-3 cm on top. After sowing, spray water appropriately to keep the substrate moist, and check periodically. Usually they will germinate in 15 days.
1. Seed Soaking and Germination
Before sowing Clivia, the seeds need to be soaked first. Soak the seeds in water, keeping the water temperature between 30-35°C, for 20-30 minutes, then take them out. After removing them, you can air-dry them for 1-2 hours, or soak them in a sodium phosphate solution for 20-30 minutes, then rinse them clean with water. Soaking allows the seeds to absorb a certain amount of water, which helps them germinate and also improves their disease resistance.
2. Potting Soil Preparation
To help the seedlings grow better, you must prepare a special growing medium. A relatively simple method is to use leaf mold mixed with fine sand, combining the two in a 2:1 ratio. Professional breeding requires wood shavings or sawdust; fine sand or leaf mold can also be used, but the results are not as good as the first two. Before use, disinfect the wood shavings first, then soak them thoroughly with water, put them in a basket and press down, and set aside for later use.
3. Sowing
The timing for sowing Clivia is not strict. As long as the temperature is between 20-25°C, the seeds can germinate, so sowing must be done in a warm environment. Place the seeds with the small eye facing down into the wood shavings, keeping them spaced apart. Then cover with 2-3 cm of wood shavings on top and press gently to level. After spraying water appropriately, place in a ventilated spot.
4. Follow-up Care
During the Clivia breeding process, periodically turn over the wood shavings to check whether the seeds have germinated. Before checking, wash your hands thoroughly, or use a clean wooden stick. Do not let oil stains get on the substrate, otherwise the seeds will become infected. Water at regular intervals to keep the substrate moist. Keep the temperature between 15-30°C, and generally they will germinate in half a month.
