How to care for areca palm in winter

The leaves of the areca palm are quite distinctive, arranged as neatly as the teeth of a comb. Although it is not commonly seen in everyday life, it has high ornamental value and also helps beautify the environment and purify the air. However, winter poses a challenge for the areca palm. How should you care for an areca palm in winter? Follow along with the editor and take a look.

1. Adjust the temperature

The areca palm is a tropical plant. It likes warmth and tolerates shade, but it fears severe cold. During winter, it needs a growing environment of at least 8°C to overwinter safely. If the temperature falls below this range, its branches and leaves will be unable to withstand the severe cold and will suffer cold damage, and in serious cases it may freeze to death. So when caring for an areca palm in winter, you need to do a good job of keeping it warm. For it to grow normally, the growing environment should ideally be kept at 25-30°C, with nighttime temperatures controlled above 15°C.

2. Increase light

Winter not only brings low temperatures, but also shorter and weaker daylight hours. When the areca palm lacks light, it does not accumulate enough nutrients, which also affects its growth. So in winter, as long as it is a sunny day, it should be given plenty of sunlight. Sufficient light can boost its vitality and its resistance to severe cold, but if the temperature is low and there is still no light, then it will struggle to overwinter.

3. Water sparingly

After entering winter, the areca palm basically enters a dormant state. At this time growth is slow and root activity is reduced, so its water requirements are not very high, and in winter there is basically no need to water. But when the temperature rises and there are consecutive sunny days, it is very easy to give it a small amount of water. Watering should preferably be done at midday when temperatures are high, and you can also spray a mist of water on the plant's leaves once a week to increase air humidity and meet its water needs.

4. Stop fertilizing

Fertilizing plants is meant to promote their growth, but in winter the temperature is lower and the growing environment is unsuitable, so the areca palm cannot grow quickly, and therefore there is no need to fertilize. So in winter, stop fertilizing. If the temperature remains stable at 15°C for a long time, then you can water in a dilute fertilizer solution once a week.
