What pot is good for growing clivia

For any kind of flower, choosing the right pot is a crucial step if you want it to grow strong and healthy. For clivia, choosing a suitable pot is even more important.

Because the root system of clivia is thick and well developed, and it is suited to upright growth, clivia has specific requirements when it comes to choosing a pot: the pot must be deep enough, meaning you should choose a slightly deeper pot. So for clivia pots of the same diameter, the depth should be greater than that of ordinary flower pots. When planting clivia, we must choose a pot made specifically for clivia. If we look carefully, we will also find that the drainage holes at the bottom of a clivia-specific pot are larger than those of ordinary flower pots. In addition, there are many ventilation holes on the side walls near the bottom of the pot, features that ordinary flower pots do not have. Because the roots of clivia like a loose, breathable environment, the drainage holes at the bottom of a clivia-specific pot are slightly larger than those of ordinary pots, and there are also ventilation holes on the side walls. In other words, clivia-specific pots are specially made according to the growth characteristics of clivia and cannot be replaced by ordinary flower pots. So when we plant clivia, we must use a clivia-specific pot and not substitute an ordinary flower pot.

In fact, even clivia-specific pots are divided into several kinds. There are clay pots, plastic pots, glazed pots and purple clay pots. Each of these pots has its own characteristics.

From the perspective of what suits clivia's growth, clay pots are the first choice; clay pots are the most ideal choice for planting clivia, and if conditions allow, you must use a clay pot.

Plastic pots, because they are light in weight and cheap in price, are chosen by many people, but the fatal drawback of plastic pots is their extremely poor breathability, making them unsuitable for indoor clivia care. However, if we are growing clivia outdoors, then plastic pots are also a good choice.

Glazed pots, although slightly more expensive and somewhat bulky to move, are still favored by many friends for their beautiful appearance, especially when caring for clivia indoors, as they can give people a feeling of elegance and refinement. The biggest drawback of glazed pots is also their poor breathability. Some clivia growers, in order to avoid the drawbacks of glazed pots, often grow clivia in clay pots and then use glazed pots as cachepots. In this way, both the breathability and the beauty requirements of the clivia pot are satisfied.

The breathability of purple clay pots is slightly worse than that of clay pots, but better than that of plastic pots and glazed pots. Because they are elegant and dignified and can give people a sense of beauty, they are favored by many clivia enthusiasts. The drawback of purple clay pots is that they are relatively expensive.

There is one more point that needs to be explained: when choosing a clivia pot, apart from clay pots, when choosing pots made of other materials, you must choose pots that have ventilation holes on the side walls and feet at the bottom. The function of the feet is to raise the bottom of the pot so that air can flow between the bottom of the pot and the ground, thereby improving the breathability of the pot.

In addition, correctly choosing a pot of suitable size is also an important part of choosing a clivia pot. For clivia seedlings with one or two leaves, you can use a pot about 5 cm in size, and two plants can be planted together in one pot. For small seedlings with four or five leaves, you can choose a pot with a diameter of 10 cm. For clivia with about ten leaves, you can choose a pot with a diameter of about 15 cm. For clivia that is more than three years but less than five years old with about 15 leaves, you can choose a pot with a diameter of 20 cm. For clivia more than five years old with more than 20 leaves, you can choose a pot with a diameter of about 30 cm.
