Use this as a base layer for orchids; it works better than clay pebbles, and the roots grow like crazy

Plastic foam is really common in everyday life, but some people actually use it to grow orchids? How does that work?

I had never seen a method like this before. I originally thought they would die, but several months passed and the orchids grew better and better, with lush branches and leaves and very vigorous roots.

Because orchids have high requirements for the soil they touch, it needs to be loose and breathable, drain well, and also have a little fertility.

Plastic foam is a good option

Plastic foam is very common in everyday life. It is generally used when transporting large items. It is very lightweight. Placed at the bottom of an orchid pot, it is breathable, does not press on the roots, and can also improve the soil's drainage and aeration.

When repotting, tear the plastic foam into small pieces of about 2cm, place them at the bottom of the flower pot, and then spread the prepared nutrient soil on top.

When doing this, be careful not to mix it together with the potting soil, and do not spread it on the surface of the soil. Otherwise it will not have much effect.

Moreover, plastic foam can also provide insulation. When the weather is cold, it can protect the roots from the effects of cold air.

There are drawbacks too. Plastic foam is relatively light, so newly planted orchids should not use this material, as it is not good for plant growth.

Plastic foam itself has no nutrients. So be sure to fertilize the orchids, applying nitrogen fertilizer 1-2 times every 30 days.
