How to care for lucky bamboo in winter

Lucky bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana) is clean and attractive, and many people keep it at home. As temperatures plummet and the cold season arrives, conditions are no longer suitable for lucky bamboo to grow, and low temperatures can easily freeze and damage the plant. So how should lucky bamboo be cared for in winter? Let's take a look together.

1. Indoor care

Lucky bamboo is afraid of the cold, especially water-cultured lucky bamboo. Once the temperature of the growing environment drops below 5°C, it can very easily freeze to death, and the leaves will droop, dry up and turn yellow. Lucky bamboo grown in the north does not require so much worry, because the north has heating, while the south does not. The potted plant can be moved indoors for care; you just need to keep the indoor temperature no lower than 5°C.

2. Changing the water

Lucky bamboo is generally grown in water. If it is grown in soil, there is no issue of changing the water. After being grown in water for a period, the root system of lucky bamboo will grow many small fine roots, so in winter, changing the water should as much as possible be replaced by topping up the water; after the water evaporates, it needs to be topped up promptly. Also, when changing the water in winter, the water temperature should not be too low and should be close to room temperature. The water quality must also be clean and fresh; do not use dirty water, hard water, or water with an oily film, otherwise the roots will very easily rot.

3. Sufficient light

Plant growth and development cannot be separated from light, and the same is true for lucky bamboo. Although it is a shade-loving plant and is usually kept indoors for care, with a low demand for sunlight, it also cannot be kept completely without light. If lucky bamboo receives no light for a long time, it will cause poor plant growth and yellow leaves, so try to place the plant in a bright, well-ventilated spot. Winter sunlight is not intense, so it can be placed directly in the sun, and this way lucky bamboo will grow more robustly.

4. Watering and fertilizing

Water-cultured lucky bamboo can have its water changed once every two weeks, while soil-cultured lucky bamboo can be watered once every 20 days. Winter temperatures are relatively low, so try not to keep it outdoors for care. In addition, it is best to water after the sun comes out and when the temperature is no lower than 10°C, which ensures the water will not freeze after watering and prevents the plant from freezing damage. Summer and autumn are the vigorous growth periods for lucky bamboo, but prevention is also needed in winter. In winter, a small amount of compound fertilizer can be applied, which can make the leaves glossy green and the stems thick and strong. However, if no fertilizer is applied for a long time, the plant will grow spindly and weak, and the leaf color will be dull and largely yellow. But when fertilizing, also pay attention to the amount to avoid burning the roots.
