The Timing and Methods for Rose Cuttings

Roses are common flowering plants in daily life, and during cultivation, cuttings are a common propagation method. This method is simple and quick, and generally a new plant can be obtained before long. So how should roses be propagated by cuttings? Let's take a look together.

I. Cutting Methods

1. Cutting Time

Although roses can be propagated by cuttings all year round, the suitable temperature for rooting is 20-25 degrees, so spring and autumn are the most suitable times for rose cuttings.

2. Selecting Branches

Both softwood and old branches of roses can be used as cuttings. First, use scissors or similar tools to cut healthy, disease-free branches from the rose plant, about 10-15 cm in length. After cutting, be sure to trim the cut end into a slanted surface, which is beneficial for rooting.

3. Soaking in Rooting Agent

Under suitable temperature conditions, roses root relatively easily, but to further speed up branch rooting, it is recommended to soak the trimmed branches in rooting agent, which helps promote the branches to root and sprout as soon as possible and helps improve the survival rate of cuttings.

4. Preparing the Potting Soil

For rose cuttings, the potting soil should preferably be sandy soil, as this not only has good moisture retention and good air permeability, but also has excellent drainage performance and is not prone to root rot. After putting it into a flower pot, water it to keep the sandy soil moist.

5. Cutting

When cutting, first use a small stick to poke a small hole in the sandy soil, then insert the branch into it. After cutting, place the branch in a cool place with scattered light, cover it with a layer of plastic film, and water it once every 2-3 days. The branch will root in two weeks.

II. Precautions

If the air is not circulating, the rose cuttings are very likely to rot due to suffocation, so after cutting, the environment must be kept well ventilated. If softwood cuttings are used, the air humidity is required to be between 85%-90%, so that before the cuttings root, the branches can remain fresh and continue photosynthesis. Rose cuttings have relatively high light requirements. They cannot be placed in full light, nor should the light be excessive. It is best to place them in a shaded place, with 30%-40% light exposure being suitable.
