Crab claw orchid care during the flowering period: increase daily light duration

The flowering period of the crab claw orchid is relatively long, but it passes through winter, so during care it is necessary to increase the duration of warm light exposure to avoid temperatures that are too low during the flowering period. Fertilizer should be supplemented appropriately with phosphorus-potassium fertilizer solution, while water usage can only be appropriately increased after flower bud differentiation.

1. Increase light

The flowering period of the crab claw orchid begins in October each year and continues until February of the following year. The flowering period coincides with winter, when it is relatively cold and lacking in light. To ensure that the buds and flowers can receive normal and stable light nourishment, the daily light duration needs to be extended. If the light intensity is too dim, artificial lighting can be used for care.

2. Control temperature

After all, the flowering period passes through winter, and before the temperature rises in early spring, more attention must be paid to temperature care for the crab claw orchid. Move it indoors before winter begins, and keep the suitable temperature stable above 12°C to ensure that the flowers will not fall off in large numbers due to low temperatures. On the premise of ensuring ventilation conditions, it is best to keep the temperature between 15~18°C.

3. Fertilizer application

Proper fertilization during the flowering period can make crab claw orchid flowers larger and more brightly colored. The fertilizer type generally used is phosphorus-potassium fertilizer or potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution, applied to the soil every 10~15 days. Once the flower buds grow healthily, fertilization can be stopped. If the flower buds are relatively weak or few in number, then topdress promptly to ensure sufficient nutrients.

4. Water irrigation

Before the flowering period of the crab claw orchid, it must not be watered too much; generally wait until the soil is completely dry, then water thoroughly. Watering too much before the flower buds grow can easily cause leggy branches and leaves, but after flower bud differentiation is complete, more water can be given appropriately to help the flower buds develop and grow rapidly, so that they can grow plump and lovely during the flowering period.
