What to Do When the Leaves of the Jade Plant Turn Yellow and Soft

The jade plant (Portulacaria afra / money tree) is a succulent that many people like, but many friends will find that its leaves turn yellow and soft during cultivation. What causes this? How should we deal with it? Let's take a look together.

1. Lower the temperature

The jade plant likes to grow in a warm and dry climate, but if the growing environment is too hot, its leaves will turn yellow. What we need to do then is spray water to cool it down, preferably keeping the growing environment temperature between 20-32°C, or you can also move the pot and soil to a shady place, and the plant's leaves will return to normal before long.

2. Reduce watering

The jade plant has a relatively high demand for water during growth. Even in the hot summer season, water must be strictly controlled. If you water too frequently, it can easily cause root rot, leading to yellowing and withering of the leaves. At this point, you need to stop watering in time. Normally, water according to the principle of "don't water until dry, and water thoroughly when you do." When rotten roots are found, take the plant out of the pot in time, trim away the rotten roots cleanly, place it in a shady spot to dry, then after strict disinfection, repot and transplant it.

3. Increase light

The jade plant is a typical sun-loving plant. If it does not see light for a long time or gets too little light, it will be unable to carry out photosynthesis and its leaves will turn yellow and wither. At this point, you need to promptly remove the yellow leaves on top, then provide artificial supplemental light, increase the light duration, and keep the air circulating in the growing environment. In an environment with sufficient light, it will recover quickly.

4. Reduce fertilizing

Although the jade plant likes fertilizer, in normal times fertilizing should mainly use dilute fertilizer liquid, and concentrated fertilizer must never be applied, otherwise fertilizer burn is very likely to occur and cause the branches and leaves to turn yellow. At this point, you need to reduce or stop fertilizing. Each time you fertilize, dilute the fertilizer with water before applying it. When the temperature drops below 15°C, you need to stop applying any fertilizer.
