How to propagate weigela? A detailed explanation of common propagation methods
Weigela is a fairly common flowering plant, widely distributed in Northeast China and North China. Its flowers are bright and glossy, with a faint floral fragrance, and the flowering period can last more than two months. Therefore, the planting area of weigela is currently quite large, but when we grow weigela, how should we propagate it? Below, the editor brings you the propagation methods for weigela, let's take a look!

1. Seed propagation
Seed propagation is a commonly used propagation method for weigela. Before sowing, collect the capsules around September, dry the capsules and rub them apart, then take out the seeds. Then, 7 days before sowing, soak the seeds in cold water for about 2 hours, then remove them and place them in a wet cloth for germination. Then sow when there is no wind or rain and no heavy rain for a period after sowing. Level and finely break up the seedbed; the sowing methods are mainly broadcast sowing and drilling, and after sowing cover with a layer of fine soil. Keep the soil moist within one month, and seedlings will emerge in about three weeks.
2. Cutting propagation
Cutting propagation is also a method suitable for propagating weigela. If you want to obtain mutant types of weigela varieties, then cuttings should be the main method. First, around Qingming Festival, cut branches that have not sprouted within two years and cut them into cuttings of about 10 cm. Then dip the base of the cuttings in an appropriate amount of rooting agent, and they can be directly cut into the seedbed in the open field. After cutting, cover with film appropriately and do a good job of shading. It is best to spread a layer of decomposed farmyard manure at the bottom of the seedbed to increase soil temperature. Control the soil temperature at about 25 degrees, the air temperature at 22 degrees, and keep the humidity at about 85%. Roots will form after about two months, and the survival rate can be as high as 80%.
3. Layering propagation
In addition to seed propagation and cutting propagation, weigela can also use layering propagation. Generally, after flowering, select robust branches from the lower part of the plant to carry out the method. Because the lower branches of the plant are close to the ground and are prostrate, the rooting survival rate at the nodes is relatively high. Girdle the node to the xylem, then directly press it into the soil, do the basic management well, and separate it from the mother plant after rooting.
4. Division propagation
And in addition to the above three, division propagation can also be used for propagating weigela. When dividing, it should be done in early spring or autumn and winter. However, the most suitable time should be around before and after spring sprouting, when the entire weigela plant is dug out completely. Then divide it into multiple clumps and directly plant them into the soil. Among the four methods, cutting propagation and layering propagation are the main ones, because seed propagation takes a relatively long time to grow and is generally rarely used. Division propagation is generally mostly used for household potted cultivation and is not suitable for propagation work in large-scale cultivation bases.
