Why doesn't the clivia bloom: lack of nutrients and overwatering

The clivia (Clivia miniata) has an elegant form, like a gentleman among flowers, and is very well loved. Many clivia grown at home fail to bloom, and in most cases it is due to a lack of nutrients. It can also be caused by excessive water, unsuitable temperatures and failure to change the soil in time. Treat the problem according to the actual situation, and before long it will recover its growth and produce abundant blooms.

1. Lack of nutrients

The growth and flowering of the clivia do have a certain demand for fertilizer. If it is not fertilized for a long time, its growth will not be vigorous and it will be difficult for it to bloom. When it fails to bloom, pay attention to whether a usual lack of nutrients is the cause. If so, promptly apply more fertilizer based mainly on phosphorus and potassium fertilizer to give the plant sufficient nutrients, so as to help it form buds and bloom.

2. Excessive water

When watering, follow the principle of not watering until dry, and watering thoroughly when you do. Never water too much, otherwise it will cause waterlogging and root rot, and then of course it will not bloom. If you have watered too much, drain the excess water promptly and let the potting soil dry in a cool, ventilated environment. Wait until it slowly recovers its growth, then water normally again.

3. Unsuitable temperature

The clivia is suited to growing in a relatively warm and humid environment. Temperatures below 10°C or above 30°C will stop its growth and affect bud formation and flowering. If the failure to bloom is caused by too high a temperature, promptly move it to a cool place with scattered light for care, and spray water on the leaves to cool it down. If it is caused by too low a temperature, move it to a warm indoor spot for care.

4. Failure to change the soil in time

Another important reason the clivia does not bloom is that the potting soil has not been changed in time. During growth it uses up all the nutrients in the potting soil, and the soil will also become compacted to a certain extent. This leads to poor drainage and, without enough nutrients, no flowering. Change the potting soil promptly, and appropriately add some bone meal and decomposed chicken manure as a base fertilizer to ensure it has enough nutrients to continue blooming.
