Can the spent leaf mold from repotting a clivia be used to grow roses?
Clivia has fairly high soil requirements. Loose, breathable, slightly acidic soil is the best soil for clivia. Roses are relatively less demanding when it comes to soil, and after secondary processing, the soil left over from caring for clivia can especially be used to grow roses. Many people do not understand urban flower growers; in places full of high-rise buildings, soil for growing flowers is quite hard to come by. Making use of waste is the best approach.
Clivia is generally repotted once every two years. Because the root system of clivia is quite demanding about soil, the soil must be changed. The soil that is removed has undergone changes in acidity and alkalinity; with long-term watering, alkaline salts, chlorine and the like all deposit in the potting soil, causing alkalization and compaction. Nutrients are also relatively depleted. At this point, the removed soil needs secondary processing and reuse as waste material.
First loosen all the removed soil, spread it out in the sun and bake it thoroughly. This sterilizes it, disinfects it and kills insect eggs. Put it in a container, let it be exposed to wind and rain, then mix in 1/3 sheep manure pellets or chicken manure and rice husks. Leave it aside, frequently watering it with household waste water. Stir it evenly once every 15 days. After 1 month it can be used to plant roses.
When planting roses, appropriately add freshwater river sand to the re-fermented soil, and it will meet the soil requirements of roses. With the improvement from sheep manure pellets and freshwater river sand, the re-fermented potting soil regains the characteristics of being slightly acidic, not compacted, not waterlogged, loose and breathable. It fully meets the requirements for replanting flowers.
Summary: Old soil left over from repotting flowers can be processed and reused. Throwing it away as garbage is quite a pity. For urban flower growers, finding soil is truly not easy; making use of waste is the real solution.
