What to Do When an Orchid Drops Its Buds?

When an orchid drops its buds during the flowering period, it may be caused by insufficient light, so the orchid needs to be moved immediately to a spot with ample sunlight for care; if overwatering is the cause, watering must be controlled, the rotten roots treated promptly, and the potting soil replaced for careful care; if nutrients are lacking, a nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer should be applied promptly, and during the flowering period the temperature also needs to be kept between 20-25°C.

1. Supplement Light

Whenever an orchid drops its buds on a large scale during the flowering period, it may be caused by a lack of light, so it needs to be moved immediately to a spot with gentle sunlight for care; normally the orchid must be placed in sunlight for care, and with the help of sunlight the plant can grow more buds and absorb nutrients from the soil.

2. Control Water Amount

Although orchids like to grow in moist soil, if overwatering makes the potting soil soggy and the roots rot, then the orchid's rotten roots need to be treated immediately, new potting soil needs to be prepared, and the plant should be repotted and placed in sunlight for care.

3. Fertilize Promptly

If an orchid drops its buds due to a lack of nutrients during growth, a nitrogen-phosphorus compound fertilizer and an appropriate amount of potassium compound fertilizer should be applied to the potting soil immediately; only in this way can bud drop be prevented, and nutrients can also be supplied to the buds in time to promote beautiful blooms, but each fertilization should not be excessive.

4. Control Temperature Generally, if an orchid drops its buds during the flowering period, it may also be caused by temperature fluctuations; at this time the orchid needs to be moved to a ventilated environment, and the ambient temperature should be kept at 20-25°C in time, so that the orchid will not drop its buds and its flowering period may even be extended.
