What to Do When a Boar's Sperm Quality Is Poor

Pork, as the meat product with the largest annual consumption in our country, is raised on a very large scale here. When raising pigs, although the management of sows and piglets is very important, we must not neglect the raising of boars either. Many times, management problems lead to poor sperm quality in boars, affecting the conception rate of breeding. So what should be done when a boar's sperm quality is poor? Below, the editor will give you a brief introduction. Let's take a look together!

1. Feed

Improper feed feeding is one of the main causes of poor sperm quality in boars. When raising boars, it is best to buy special boar feed on the market for feeding. This is because the nutrition in special boar feed is very comprehensive and is also very beneficial to the growth of boars. They should be fed at least about twice a day, usually in the morning and evening. In summer, because the temperature is high and dry, feeding should be done with wet mixed feed. Increase the boar's feed intake and balance the nutritional level of the feed. About 30 minutes after feeding, clean the trough in time to avoid leftover feed in the trough fermenting and spoiling.

2. Drinking Water

Drinking water is also very important for the growth of boars. When providing drinking water, we should not blindly feed cold water all the time. The amount of drinking water and water temperature should be controlled according to seasonal changes. For example, in summer, because the temperature is very high, the boar's demand for drinking water will also rise greatly, so the water flow rate of the drinker should be kept at at least about two liters per minute. The water temperature should not be too high. If the water temperature exceeds 30°C, then it will definitely affect the boar's drinking water intake. It is also very likely to cause a series of problems such as reduced feed intake and constipation.

3. Body Condition

In addition to the boar's eating and drinking, we should also pay attention to controlling the boar's body condition well. The boar's body weight is also closely related to sperm quality. It should not be too fat or too thin, and its weight should be maintained at about 180 kg. For adult boars, in order to prevent them from becoming too fat, restricted feeding should be done well, and feed should be provided according to the boar's fat condition. Then, in the cooler morning and evening, encourage the boar to exercise more to maintain its physical strength. Enhance the boar's libido, thereby improving the boar's sperm quality and vitality.

4. Semen Collection and Breeding

After the boar's body weight reaches the breeding standard, semen collection and breeding work should begin. When collecting semen, we should still control the number of collections according to the boar's age and body condition. For example, if it is an adult boar, then the number of semen collections per week is about two times. If it is a young boar, then it is about once, and it must be collected every week. The amount and frequency of semen collection must be well controlled. Never collect too much semen or breed excessively, so as to avoid harming the boar.
