Poinsettia Cuttage Methods and Timing Explained in Detail
Poinsettias are grown on a relatively large area in China, and when growing poinsettias, the most commonly used propagation method is cuttage. Whether old branches or young shoots, both can be used for cuttage, and the survival rates are also relatively high. When carrying out cuttage propagation, we should select different cutting branches and timing according to the circumstances. So how should poinsettias be propagated by cuttage? And when should the cuttings be taken? Let's take a look together with the editor below!

I. Cuttage Timing
The cuttage timing for poinsettias should be chosen according to the cutting branches. If the cutting branches are semi-lignified semi-hard branches, then cuttage should be carried out from March to May each year, when the temperature is around 15 degrees. If young shoot cuttings are used, then it should be done at the end of March, and as long as the temperature is kept above 20 degrees, it can be carried out all the way until September. Finally, if the cutting branches are old roots, the cuttage timing should be around March to April.
II. Cuttage Methods
1. Semi-hardwood cutting
First we need to select the branches well; the branches should mainly be about one-year-old semi-lignified stems. The length should be kept at more than about 10 cm, then the leaves at the lower end of the branch should be cut off. Then cut the base of the branch diagonally into a slanted surface, and disinfect it to avoid bacterial infection. After the branch is prepared, simply insert the branch directly into the soil. Then keep the temperature at around 23 degrees, and water thoroughly; under normal circumstances, roots will form after three weeks. Each time, several cuttings can be inserted, and then a branch with better growth can be selected from them for planting.
2. Young shoot cutting
For young shoot cuttings, the branches should mainly be current-year shoots, and about 6 leaves should be kept on the branch. The length should be kept at about 7 cm, then remove the ordinary leaves. After cutting off the leaves, soak the branch in water for about two minutes to prevent the sap in the branch from flowing out of the wound, and then insert it directly into the soil. After young shoot cutting, pay attention to maintaining a moist soil environment, water frequently, and do a good job of shading; under normal circumstances, roots will form after about half a month.
3. Old root cutting
If it is a potted poinsettia, then repotting and changing the soil must be done every year. For poinsettias cultivated for many years, many old roots will be produced. Therefore, when repotting, we can choose some discarded old roots for cuttage, cutting the old roots into pieces of about 10 cm. Then disinfect them, and insert them into the soil; it is best to ensure that the old roots have a small amount of fibrous roots. Try to insert the cuttings relatively deep, to provide sufficient space for the roots to extend; under normal circumstances, new leaves will grow after about one month.
The above is a brief introduction to poinsettia cuttage methods and timing. That is all for today's introduction; this article is for reference only, and we hope it can help everyone!
