Crabapple propagation by cuttings

Crabapple is a common flowering plant in China, and also a plant native to China. It enjoys the fine reputation of "national beauty", and its ornamental value is very high. The fruit of some crabapple varieties is even edible. So today crabapple is grown over a very large area, and when growing crabapple, the propagation method is generally based on cuttings. And today the editor brings you the crabapple cutting propagation method, let's take a look!

1. Cutting time

When propagating crabapple by cuttings, we must first choose a suitable cutting time. The right cutting time has a great deal to do with the survival rate of the cuttings. Normally, the growing season of crabapple is generally spring and autumn, and the climate in spring and autumn is also very suitable for crabapple growth. Therefore, in April-May every year, when the temperature is around 20 degrees, is the best time to take crabapple cuttings.

2. Branch selection

After deciding on the cutting time for crabapple, we then need to choose the cutting branches well. The cutting branches should mainly be strong, oil-rich branches free of pests, diseases and wounds. Keep the branch length at about 6 cm. After choosing the branches, use a sharp blade to cut them off, making sure the cut on the branch is complete and smooth. When cutting the branches, be careful that the wound must not touch water, to avoid bacterial infection.

3. Branch treatment

After the branches are selected and cut, we also need to treat the branches. First observe whether there are flower buds on the branches; if there are flower buds, remove them. Then disinfect the cut on the branch. For the disinfectant, you can choose agents such as carbendazim. After applying it appropriately, put the branch in a ventilated place to dry. Once dried, it can be used for cuttings.

4. Preparing the substrate

Before choosing and treating the branches, we must first prepare the cutting substrate. The cutting substrate for crabapple can be mainly soil; generally, river sand can be used to make it up. Although crabapple is not very demanding about the soil substrate, we should still pay attention to disinfecting it when choosing the soil. After washing the river sand clean, put it in the sun to bake for about two days, then water it thoroughly and it is ready for cuttings.

5. Cutting at the right time

After all the preparation work is done, you can start taking cuttings. The crabapple cutting method is very simple: just insert the branch into the soil. After cutting, keep the branch upright. Note that you must not water it right away; if it lacks water, you can only spray it lightly. Then keep it in a ventilated, cool environment. Normally, after about 10 days the cuttings can survive and take root, and then you can transplant them according to the actual situation.
