How to improve the survival rate of magnolia grafting
To improve the survival rate of magnolia grafting, you must pay attention to:
① Grafting time. For approach grafting, it can be done throughout the entire growing season from spring to autumn, with grafting in April giving the highest survival rate; for cut grafting, late and mid-September gives the highest survival rate.
② Grafting method. Use purple magnolia (Magnolia liliiflora) with a rootstock 2 cm thick as the rootstock, and two-year-old vigorous white magnolia (Magnolia denudata) branches as the scion. After sprouting in the second year, remove the lower buds and keep the upper 4 buds.
③ Care after grafting. For approach grafting, wrap the outside of the binding with soil and cover it with leaves to prevent rain from washing it away. After cut grafting, the scion area should also be covered with soil, and the soil should be kept moist regularly. In cold winter weather, the ground needs to be covered with straw, leaves, etc. for warmth, and the covering should be removed in late spring of the following year.
