How to Grow Orostachys

Orostachys (Chinese dunce cap) originally grew on rocky mountain slopes, in the cracks of old roof tiles, or on top of walls. Nowadays it is rarely seen. The plant is small and compact with an elegant shape, and it is also a traditional Chinese medicinal herb used to clear heat and detoxify. In recent years it has become popular with flower enthusiasts, and many people grow it in pots at home. So how do you grow Orostachys? Let's take a look.

1. A Suitable Container

Orostachys originally grows in the cracks of roof tiles or on top of walls, so when growing it you need to create a similar environment. You can use a small plastic box as the container, or simply use a flower pot. Fill the bottom half with nutrient soil and the top half with coarse river sand, then plant the small seedlings. This way the growing medium is loose and breathable, and even after watering it dries out quickly, so root rot will not occur.

2. Growing Environment

Orostachys is a long-day plant and is suited to growing in an environment with ample light, so when caring for it, place it in a well-ventilated, sunny spot, such as on a balcony or beside a windowsill. However, in summer, pay attention to ventilation and shade; it should not be left in direct sun for long periods, as this can easily cause sunburn on the leaves. After winter begins, it is best to place it in a sunny spot indoors.

3. Suitable Moisture

Orostachys is a plant with fleshy roots, and its roots and stems contain a large amount of water, so there is no need to water it frequently during normal care. Generally, in spring, water once every 4-5 days; in summer, watering three times a month is enough; after autumn begins, control watering, and each time you water, make sure to water thoroughly.

4. Regular Fertilizing

Regular fertilizing is a basic requirement for growing Orostachys. During the growing season, fertilizing should follow the rule of not applying too much fertilizer; it is best to water with diluted fertilizer solution, so that concentrated fertilizer does not damage the roots. When fertilizing, apply it around the roots. Generally, apply diluted decomposed cake fertilizer water once a month. Stop fertilizing when the temperature is above 35°C or below 12°C.

5. Pay Attention to Ventilation

Orostachys is fairly sensitive to its surroundings. During the growing season, do not rush to move it outdoors; it is best to keep it in a protected place for a period before taking it outside, so as not to disrupt the roots' adaptability. In spring and summer, also pay attention to ventilation. For indoor potted plants, open the doors and windows often to prevent pests and diseases.
