How to teach piglets to eat from a trough: methods and precautions explained

Trough-feeding training methods and precautions for piglets

The first feed given to piglets at weaning is called creep feed. It is commonly known as supplementary feed or starter feed, and its main purpose is to overcome the problem of weakened body condition in weaned piglets caused by insufficient mother's milk. However, many people do not pay attention to creep feeding, which often leads to problems such as reduced appetite and indigestion in piglets, seriously affecting their later growth. So how should piglets be trained to eat from a trough? Let's take a look together.

1. The importance of creep feeding for piglets

After weaning, piglets often show stress responses such as decreased appetite, indigestion, low feed utilization, reduced immunity and disease resistance, and diarrhea, which greatly affect their growth and development. Therefore, using creep feed with a high-quality formula to train piglets to eat can allow their intestinal tract to develop fully, so that after weaning they can rely entirely on feed and pass through the weaning period smoothly.

2. Creep feeding methods

There are generally four creep feeding methods. The first is foreign object guidance: place a few disinfected goose eggs in the piglet trough, prompting the piglets to root at the goose eggs out of curiosity, so that they naturally eat the feed in the trough. The second is the smearing method: mix the creep feed into a paste, then smear it on the sow's udder, so that the piglets gradually become accustomed to the feed. The third is the forced supplementary feeding method: this method involves forcing piglets to swallow feed mixed into a paste, then gradually using feed after 3-4 times per day, but its drawback is that it may cause stress responses in piglets, so do not use it unless absolutely necessary. The fourth is the older-leading-younger method: raise piglets that already know how to eat together with piglets that do not, using pigs' imitative nature to teach the piglets that do not know how to eat.

3. Precautions

Because pigs have poor eyesight, when choosing a trough, try to choose one with bright colors, and choose a trough with a shallow rim, as this makes it easier for pigs to feed. The placement of the trough should also be noted; try not to place it at the sow's hindquarters, and the position near the head is best, but this position must not be next to the drinker, so as not to affect creep feeding. Also ensure that there is an adequate water supply in the pen. If piglets develop diarrhea or become emaciated, you can switch to dry mixed feed or increase the amount of wet feed to improve the piglets' feed intake.
