What should be done about porcine epidemic diarrhea

Pigs being found with it is the most common disease on pig farms, but there are many causes of diarrhea in pigs on farms, and among them is a contact intestinal infection caused by porcine epidemic diarrhea virus. When it strikes, it is very similar to transmissible gastroenteritis, but the mortality rate is relatively high, and piglets are especially prone to death after infection. So what should be done about porcine epidemic diarrhea? Let's take a look together.

1. Symptoms of porcine epidemic diarrhea

The incubation period of porcine epidemic diarrhea is generally 5 to 8 days, and the clinical symptoms are mainly watery diarrhea, or it may be accompanied by vomiting, which generally occurs after eating or nursing. The severity of symptoms varies with age; the younger the animal, the more severe the symptoms. After 3-4 days of diarrhea in one-week-old piglets, severe cases die from dehydration, with a mortality rate as high as 50%; after infection in finishing pigs, diarrhea occurs, and they generally recover in about a week, with a mortality rate of 1%-3%; while adult pigs show milder symptoms, some only showing vomiting, and in severe cases watery diarrhea for 3-4 days can resolve on its own.

2. Prevention methods

First, you should work on the feed, strengthen nutrition, and control mycotoxin poisoning; a certain proportion of mycotoxin adsorbent can be added to the feed. Then find ways to raise the temperature of the pig house, especially the gestation house, farrowing house, and nursery house, to ensure that the pigs grow in a suitable temperature environment. At the same time, regular health care should be carried out on the pig farm, with synchronized health care for the whole herd for one week each month to control the breeding of bacterial diseases. For health care three days after the sow gives birth, you can choose Gaore Jinzhen injection first. If an infected animal is found, inject 10 ml to 20 ml three days after birth.

3. Treatment methods

For diarrheic pigs aged 8-13 days, oral rehydration salts can be mixed with oxytetracycline base or norfloxacin, warmed to 39 degrees, and administered orally, 4-5 times a day, to ensure the pigs do not become dehydrated. Severely ill pigs should be isolated promptly to avoid spreading the disease, and then adjuvant drug treatment should be used. At present, China has developed a PEDV formaldehyde aluminum hydroxide inactivated vaccine, which can be used to prevent and treat this disease, and sows and piglets can be vaccinated.
