Orchid Leaves Turning Yellow: Causes and Solutions

What to Do When Orchid Leaves Turn Yellow?

The causes of yellowing orchid leaves are mostly unstable lighting, improper watering, over-fertilizing and pests and diseases. Only by identifying the cause can you remedy it more effectively.

1. Control the Light

Orchids need 4-6 hours of diffused sunlight each day to grow normally. If the light they receive is insufficient or too long, it will cause the leaves to turn yellow. In addition, if they are exposed to the scorching sun for a long time in summer, the leaves will also be sunburned and turn withered and yellow, so the light range needs to be well controlled.

2. Water Reasonably

Orchids like a humid environment, but this does not mean they need excessive water. If water accumulates in the potting soil, affecting the breathing of the roots, the plant will wilt and turn yellow. At this point, watering should be stopped and you should wait for it to recover. If root rot has already occurred, it is best to replace the potting soil in time to prevent the whole plant from dying.

3. Fertilize in Moderation

When fertilizing orchids, apply light fertilizer frequently, and avoid raw fertilizer and concentrated fertilizer. If too much fertilizer is applied, it will only have the opposite effect, causing the leaves to turn yellow, and in severe cases it may burn the roots and eventually lead to death. If the leaves have already turned yellow severely, you can water appropriately to dilute the fertilizer.

4. Pest and Disease Protection

Orchids are very susceptible to red spider mites or scale insects, and in this case pesticides should be sprayed promptly to kill them. It is best to observe the condition of the leaves every day and prevent problems in time. If symptoms such as leaf blight appear, first remove the seriously affected parts to avoid affecting healthy branches and leaves, then spray the solution to prevent the disease from continuing to spread.
