Pruning Techniques for Plumeria

Plumeria grows extremely fast when water and nutrients are abundant. If left unchecked, it will grow lush and bushy in a short time, which not only affects its ornamental appeal but also seriously affects the plant's growth, so it needs to be pruned at the right time. So how should plumeria be pruned? Let's take a look together.

1. Pruning to Control Height

Plumeria grows and develops quickly. If it is not pruned for a period of time, its main trunk will grow very tall, but no side branches will appear. Therefore, proper pruning is needed. When the plant grows to 20-30 cm, cut off its top to control the growth height of the main stem and also encourage side branches to grow, so its plant shape will gradually spread out. After pruning, also pay attention to the wounds. Once they come into contact with water, bacterial infection may occur, damaging the growth nodes and harming the plant's growth.

2. Root Pruning

Root pruning is carried out when repotting. You can take the main stem out of the flower pot, then use sterilized scissors to prune off the plant's rotten roots and old roots. At the same time, also prune off overly long roots and dense roots, keeping the fibrous roots. If you find rotten roots, disinfect and sterilize after pruning, then place the plant in a cool, ventilated spot and wait for the wounds to dry before replanting. It is best to replace the original potting soil. If not replacing it, carry out comprehensive disinfection and sterilization to avoid secondary infection.

3. Pruning After Flowers Fade

Plumeria's flowering period is from May to October. After its flowering period ends, pruning must be carried out, promptly cutting off the faded flowers to avoid consuming more nutrients and also to prevent the fallen flowers from rotting on the branches.
