Rapid Fattening and Finishing Techniques for Lambs

Nowadays, many people return to their hometowns to start businesses and get into farming to make money, and raising sheep is a relatively popular project. Lambs generally need 3-6 months to be finished, which makes the raising period rather long, so many people speed up finishing through lamb fattening. But if you want to fatten mutton sheep quickly and finish them quickly, what do you need to do? Let's find out together.

1. Supplementary Feeding of Lambs

You can use grain feed paired with an appropriate amount of soybean cake, or you can use a mixed concentrate feed. The amount of concentrate feed fed to lambs increases as the lambs grow older in months. At 20-30 days of age, feed each lamb 50-70 grams; at 1-2 months of age, 100-150 grams; at 2-3 months of age, 200 grams, with supplementary feeding twice a day. After that, select lambs from the flock that are large in size, well developed, strong in feed intake and free of disease to form a fattening group. It is best to choose male lambs, because male lambs grow fast and have not yet reached sexual maturity, so the fattening effect is the most obvious.

2. Castration to Promote Growth

Castration of male lambs is generally carried out together with tail docking. The rubber band method and the surgical method can be used, and the more commonly used one is the rubber band method, which is to push the testicles of male lambs within 7 days of age into the scrotum, then tightly tie off the spermatic cord area together with the scrotum using a rubber band. After 20-30 days, the scrotum and testicles will dry up and fall off naturally. The surgical method also directly removes the testicles of male lambs by surgery, and it is recommended to have a veterinarian or an experienced person perform it.

3. Timely Tail Docking

Tail docking of lambs can accelerate the growth of mutton sheep and also has the effect of improving meat quality and reducing the muttony odor. Lambs from 2-21 days of age can all be tail docked, but -7 days of age is the most suitable, and the best time to dock the tail is on a sunny morning. As with castration, there are two methods of tail docking. One is rubber band tail docking: use a rubber band with good elasticity and put it between the 2nd-3rd caudal vertebrae of the lamb, so that the lower part of the tail cannot get nutrients and shrinks, and it will fall off on its own after 10 days. The second is quick knife tail docking: tie the base of the tail with a thin rope, cut off the blood circulation, then use a sharp knife to cut it off 4-5 cm from the tail, bandage it well with sterile gauze, and after a few hours the tying rope can be untied, and it can heal after 5-7 days.

4. Disease Prevention

In the feeding and management of mutton sheep, there must always be sufficient and clean drinking water available, and at the same time the sheep shed must be kept well ventilated and the floor dry, and the sheep shed and feeding utensils must be cleaned and disinfected frequently. According to the local characteristics of sheep disease prevalence, adhere to the principle of prevention first, and carry out drug prevention and immunization for the flock in a planned way to prevent the occurrence of infectious diseases and parasitic diseases.
