Methods for Rapid Weight Gain in Finishing Pigs

Pig farming is a traditional livestock industry in China. In farm management, farmers mostly pay attention to the management of breeding pigs and piglets, while fattening management is often neglected, resulting in slow weight gain and a high disease rate in finishing pigs. So is there any way to make finishing pigs gain weight quickly? Let's take a look.

1. Fermented feed with koji starter

The formula for fermented feed with koji starter is 175 grams of Chinese yam, 165 grams of dried tangerine peel, 155 grams of male fern rhizome (Dryopteris crassirhizoma), 185 grams of Poria cocos, 500 grams of glucose, etc. Grind these raw materials into powder, then add egg white and mix well, put the mixture into a jar to ferment, and when it turns yellow, take it out and dry it. Using crushed fine and coarse feed at a ratio of 300 grams per 100 kg, add it and stir evenly, then add 70 kg of water, let it stand and ferment in the jar. After 20 hours of fermentation, when a sweet wine aroma appears, it can be taken out for feeding. Feed three times a day, each time until about 90% full. When feeding, feed green fodder first, then the fermented feed, and provide plenty of drinking water. One point to note here is that this koji-starter fermented feed is only suitable for growing-finishing pigs (feeder pigs); it cannot be used for piglets, breeding pigs, or sows.

2. Orange peel powder

Orange peel contains medicinal components such as volatile oil, hesperidin, and vitamins, as well as trace elements such as iron, magnesium, manganese, and zinc. It also contains essential amino acids needed by livestock and poultry, among which valine, leucine, and lysine are present in relatively high amounts. When feeding finishing pigs, adding 5%-10% dried orange peel powder to the feed significantly increases the average daily weight gain. In recent years, this method has achieved good results in Japan.

3. Mugwort leaf powder

Mugwort leaves contain not only protein and fat, but also aromatic oil, vitamins A, B1, B2, and C, and various essential amino acids, minerals, chlorophyll, etc. They are a weakly alkaline substance. They can promote blood circulation, enhance metabolism, promote growth and reproduction, improve meat quality, increase feed utilization, and have antibacterial and deodorizing effects. According to experimental research, adding 1%-2% mugwort leaf powder to pig feed can increase the daily weight gain of pigs by 5%-8% and reduce the feed consumption rate by 7.5%-12.3%.
