How to carry out division management for orchids

Orchids have been deeply loved by Chinese people since ancient times. Some orchid enthusiasts have kept orchids at home for many years, and they have grown to fill the pots. They worry about how to divide them. Today Xiaoye will talk about this.

Water control

When carrying out division, stop watering a few days in advance and keep the potting soil dry. This is to let the orchid roots lose water and become soft so they are not easy to break, making them easier to handle when repotting. Otherwise, the orchid roots absorb enough water and are prone to breaking.

Turning out the pot and dividing the clumps

After turning the orchid out of the pot and taking it out, gently remove the soil. While straightening out the tangled orchid roots, prune away empty roots, diseased roots, and diseased yellow leaves. Be careful not to damage leaf buds and new roots. Then look for the division points and pry them apart by hand. The division points are the places where the gaps between the pseudobulbs are relatively large, commonly known as "horse roads." Each division should retain roots, and it is advisable to keep 2 or more shoots.

Drying and potting

After the divided orchid seedlings are cleaned and dried, they can be potted. At the bottom of the flower pot, first lay a layer of tiles, ceramsite, etc., which can enhance the ventilation and drainage function of the bottom. Then, with one hand holding the orchid plant and the other hand adding soil until it is 2-3 cm from the edge of the pot, lift the orchid plant slightly, with the height based on the upper end of the pseudobulb being level with the soil surface. Gently press the potting soil so that the soil and roots are in close contact, to avoid hollows caused by watering. Finally, a layer of moss can be spread on the soil surface to retain moisture. An appropriate amount of Ye Hong Shi Guang microbial agent special orchid fertilizer can be added to the soil used, to promote the growth of orchid roots and reduce pests and diseases.

Later care

After potting, water once to settle the roots. It is best to use the soaking pot method so that the pot absorbs enough water. Then place the orchid in a shaded place, controlling water and fertilizer. After about half a month to 1 month, place it in a place with bright light, with ventilation and air circulation.
