How to handle hyacinths after they bloom? A detailed guide to post-bloom care
Hyacinth is one of the famous bulb flowers that bloom in early spring. Shortly after it blooms, the above-ground plant gradually withers. Many people throw it away once it loses its ornamental value, but this is actually a mistake. So how should you handle a hyacinth after it blooms? Let's take a look.

I. Soil-cultured hyacinths
1. Natural care
After a soil-cultured hyacinth blooms, you can simply place the withered potted hyacinth in a cool, ventilated spot, stop fertilizer and water care, and wait until the temperature rises the following year to resume watering and feeding, starting a new round of hyacinth cultivation and care so it can grow and develop normally.
2. Bulb handling
Alternatively, after it blooms, you can dig the bulb of the soil-cultured hyacinth out of the soil, cut off the withered stems and leaves above, leaving only the bulb, then wrap the bulb in newspaper and place it in a cool, ventilated spot. When the hyacinth's growing season arrives the next year, take the bulb out and replant it, burying it in moist sandy soil and keeping the surrounding environment at 20-30 degrees to encourage it to re-root and sprout.
II. Hydroponic hyacinths
1. Care in water
After a hydroponic hyacinth blooms, you can continue to care for it in water, watering and changing the water for it and adding drops of nutrient solution to supplement nutrients, letting it grow and develop until the high-temperature period of summer arrives, when it enters dormancy.
2. Pruning and cold storage
After the hyacinth goes dormant, cut off its yellowed leaves and also trim off all its roots, keeping only the clean bulb. Then, after the wounds have dried, wrap it in newspaper and put it in the refrigerator to chill. When the temperature drops in autumn, take the bulb out in November, place it in a hydroponic container, add water to just below the bottom of the bulb, then place it in a dark, lightless spot at around 5 degrees. It usually roots in about 25 days, after which you can care for it normally.
III. Points to note
After being handled post-bloom, a hyacinth is in urgent need of care and can bloom again, but by this time its bulb has already entered a degenerate state, and the flowers it produces will become shorter and no longer attractive. So after it blooms it can only be handled once, and after that you will need to buy a new hyacinth to grow.
