How to Propagate and Root Schefflera Cuttings

Schefflera (Schefflera octophylla) is an evergreen shrub plant of the Araliaceae family, widely distributed in China. In China today, Schefflera is a large potted plant, quite suitable for placement in various public places, and its ornamental value is very high. Currently, the cultivation area of Schefflera is very large, so when growing Schefflera, how should propagation and rooting from cuttings be carried out? Below, the editor will give everyone a brief introduction. Let's take a look together!

1. Soil Cuttings

Soil cutting is one of the Schefflera cutting methods. Before carrying out soil cuttings, first, in spring before the plant's branches have sprouted, cut off branches about 12-14 cm in length. Remove the lower leaves of the branch, keep about 3 leaves at the top, and then cut the lower end of the branch into a slanted surface. Then use perlite or fine river sand, etc., to prepare the substrate, and insert the branch about 2/3 deep. After cutting, spray water appropriately, do a good job of shading, and provide a low-light environment for it. On sunny days, water once every day, keep the temperature at around 20°C, and roots will form in about 45 days. After rooting, it can be transplanted in about 2-4 weeks.

2. Water Cuttings

For water cuttings, first choose a clean cutting container, then select healthy branches without wounds, keeping the length at about 8 cm. Keep the lower part of the branch smooth, and keep about 3 leaves at the top. Then fill the container with clean water, and directly insert the cutting into the container. Note that the cutting should be suspended in the water and must not touch the bottom of the container or the container wall. Control the number of cuttings according to the specifications of the container. After cutting, wrap the cutting in a transparent plastic bag to provide an appropriate amount of scattered light. Keep the temperature at around 20°C, and then when roots about 2 cm long have grown, it can be transplanted.

3. Full-Light Mist Cuttings

For full-light mist cuttings, first use film or a glass greenhouse to create a high-humidity environment for Schefflera. This allows Schefflera to speed up its propagation rate under high temperature and humidity conditions. Then, at the bottom of the cutting trough, lay a layer of bricks, and on the bricks lay a layer of sand about 30 cm thick that has been disinfected in advance. Select branches of the current year's growth, controlling the length at about 8 cm. Then treat the cuttings in the same way as for water cuttings, insert the cuttings about 2/3 deep, and then spray mist. The temperature should likewise be kept at around 20°C, spray water on the leaves once every day, and after rooting, they can be planted out.

The above is a brief introduction to how to propagate and root Schefflera cuttings. There are many methods for propagating and rooting Schefflera cuttings, and everyone needs to choose reasonably according to their own habits and conditions. That is all for today's introduction.
