Pruning methods for potted jasmine

The jasmine plant is relatively short and small, with small flowers, and it does not weigh down the branches, so it is very suitable for potted cultivation. However, when growing it in pots, the branches cannot be allowed to grow however they like; the branches need to be adjusted and properly shaped. In this way, the ornamental value can be improved, and the plant shape will not become scattered. How should it be pruned, what principles are there, and what are the pruning methods? Let us take a look now!

1. Growth pruning

This mainly refers to the period from after sprouting to before the start of winter, which is all considered the growth period. When pruning at this time, mainly prune the old branches, keep the new strong branches, and renew the branches. During vigorous growth, water sprouts are likely to appear and must be cut off, otherwise they will directly ruin the shape, and water sprouts do not easily bloom. During periods of high temperature and high humidity, diseases occur easily, and pests are also likely to cause damage, so it is best to cut off diseased branches and leaves as soon as they are found. Branches inside that hinder ventilation should all be removed.

2. Winter pruning

In winter, the plant enters dormancy, and pruning can be carried out throughout the entire winter. At this time, mainly prune dead branches, as well as late autumn shoots, and some small, poorly developed branches can all be cut off. For branches grown in the current year, cut them back, leaving 15 cm of length at the base, but weak branches grown in the current year may be left out.

3. Flowering pruning

When new shoots in spring grow to 5 nodes, begin pinching. Pinching is to prevent excessive vegetative growth. The tender leaves of branches that do not form flower buds can be picked off to save nutrients and help other branches bloom. Part of the old leaves at the bottom can be appropriately removed. For branches that are blooming, pinch the tips to ensure nutrients are supplied to the flower buds.

4. Pruning after flowering

Flowering consumes a large amount of nutrients, so the plant will supply most of its nutrients to flowering, and after flowering the plant is relatively weak. At this time, the flowering branches should be cut off, and all branches that have bloomed should be cut off. In this way, continued consumption can be avoided, and some spent flowers should also be cut off, since they will not bloom again anyway.

Pruning potted jasmine is all for the good growth of the jasmine and smooth flowering. After flowering, it ensures good flowering in the coming year. And it maintains the growing shape.
