Cow breeding timing and precautions

Cattle farmers all know that cows have a short estrus period and ovulate quickly, and in autumn feed is abundant, which is exactly when bulls are full of energy, and it is also the best breeding time. However, there are many factors that affect whether a cow can be bred successfully. Once the best timing is missed, it will lead to breeding failure and cause losses. So when is the best time to breed a cow? What precautions are there? Let us learn about it together.

I. The best time for cow breeding

1. After a cow has been in estrus for 12-18 hours, breeding can be carried out according to the principle of "breed in the afternoon if in estrus in the morning, and breed the next morning if in estrus in the afternoon."

2. From the disappearance of the cow's sexual desire to its disappearance, or 5 hours, at this time the cow no longer accepts mounting, appears quiet, and the vaginal mucus is thick; when picked up with the index finger and thumb and stretched, it does not break after 7-8 times.

3. In the third stage of follicular development, that is, the follicular maturation stage, perform a rectal examination, and conduct an ovulation check 10-12 hours after breeding. If the follicle still has not ruptured and ovulated, breed once more.

II. Breeding precautions

1. Fattening

Before the breeding season arrives, cows of suitable age should also have moderate body condition. For cows in poorer condition, the feed ratio can be adjusted appropriately, increasing nutrition and the number of supplemental feedings, and extending grazing time, cutting grass to feed the cows, and encouraging the cows to come into estrus and ovulate. At the same time, attention should also be paid to nutritional balance in daily care, so as to avoid excessive intake of protein and energy feed that causes cows to become obese and affects breeding quality.

2. Estrus induction

Use a bull in estrus to chase the cow and stimulate the cow to come into estrus, or for cows not in estrus, use hormone production and inject the cow with 25-35 mg of diethylstilbestrol, or 40-60 mg of diethylstilbestrol, which can also make the cow come into estrus and be bred.

3. Timely breeding

After a cow comes into estrus, its appetite decreases, it is excited and restless, likes to approach bulls, and mounts each other. The vagina often has white, semi-transparent mucus flowing out, and a small number of cows also have a small amount of blood flowing from the vagina. This is the best time for breeding. Using artificial insemination during breeding is an important measure to improve the conception rate of cows. Insert the insemination tube straight into the cow's cervix 5-7 cm, then slowly inject the semen. After insemination, slowly pull out the insemination tube to prevent damage to the cow's vagina or semen backflow.

4. Strengthen management

During the breeding period, bulls should be fed more green feed and concentrate, and during busy periods animal-based feed should be added, such as eggs, fish meal, etc. Within 1-2 hours after a cow has just been bred, do not let it exercise strenuously, and try to avoid drinking water or eating too full. Half a month after breeding, provide supplemental feed at night, and supply clean drinking water containing a small amount of salt to promote the implantation of the fertilized egg. It is strictly forbidden to feed moldy, spoiled, frozen, toxic, overly acidic, or strongly irritating feed, to prevent enteritis, miscarriage, weak fetuses, or stillbirths.
