Cotton rose hibiscus cultivation methods and precautions

Cotton rose hibiscus is a perennial flower. When growing it, you can plant it either in the ground or in a pot. Its blooms are extremely beautiful, with gorgeous flowers that change three times in a day: at dawn in early spring the flower color is pinkish white, at noon it becomes light red, and at sunset it turns deep red. So how should cotton rose hibiscus be grown? Let's take a look.

1. Soil

Fertile, moist, well-drained sandy loam is best for the growth of cotton rose hibiscus. Soil rich in humus mixed with river sand or coal cinder is also very suitable for its growth. Heavier clay soil or soil prone to waterlogging is not good for its growth, so when growing it you must choose soil with good drainage.

2. Light and temperature

Cotton rose hibiscus likes light but also tolerates partial shade. Sufficient light will make its branches and leaves grow robustly, and with enough light during the flowering period the flowers will be larger and more beautiful. It needs sufficient light when it blooms in autumn, so potted cotton rose hibiscus grown indoors should be moved to a balcony or similar spot in time to encourage normal flowering. Cotton rose hibiscus is a frost-tolerant plant. Although too low a temperature will cause its aboveground plant to die back, it will still grow new shoots again after spring begins, so there is no need to worry about it dying during winter cultivation.

3. Watering and fertilizing

Cotton rose hibiscus prefers to grow in a moist environment. In daily care we need to keep the soil moist and not let it dry out completely. In summer, water once or twice a day, generally once in the morning and once in the evening; the number of waterings should be chosen according to the size of the pot. Each watering must soak through. On rainy days watering can be reduced, while on sunny days water at least once. Sufficient fertilizer can make cotton rose hibiscus grow better. Generally, for cotton rose hibiscus planted in the ground, fertilize according to soil fertility; for potted cotton rose hibiscus, apply a compound fertilizer once every half month to maintain the nutrients needed for its growth and flowering.

4. Precautions

Although cotton rose hibiscus is frost-tolerant, it can still freeze to death when winter temperatures are very low. If some cold-protection measures are taken in winter, such as covering it with a plastic bag with a few small holes poked in it for ventilation, or placing it indoors in scattered light or on a semi-enclosed balcony, this can help it overwinter safely.
