Bagging orchids in winter: even weak and sickly orchid seedlings can safely overwinter

Orchids

Because winter air is dry, low in humidity and full of dust, it is a very bad environment for orchids, so how can this situation be improved? Some flower growers experimented with the method of putting plastic bags over orchids. So-called bagging cultivation of orchids refers to a method of growing orchids in which a potted orchid with a support frame already set up is covered with a suitably sized transparent plastic bag to raise the air humidity of the small environment for growing orchids. After bagging the potted orchid, to enhance ventilation inside the pot and regulate temperature, you can use the lit tip of a stick of incense to burn a few small holes in the bag. Can you guess how it turned out? Let us learn about it together:

The weak and sickly small seedlings of Cymbidium sinense and Cymbidium goeringii that this flower grower had previously grown were cultivated by ordinary methods, still opening the windows for ventilation or using an electric fan, and as a result the orchids either dried up or the orchid seedlings rotted at the core, and in the end all died and were thrown out as garbage. Later he bought Cymbidium goeringii again, and because they were not cultivated well, all the seedlings collapsed, some of the old pseudobulbs also rotted away, and only 2 old small pseudobulbs were left. He thought he would give it a try and put a plastic bag over this pot of sickly orchids, and as a result the old pseudobulbs unexpectedly grew 2 small seedlings one after another.

Using the bagging method to grow weak and sickly orchid seedlings is suitable not only for the north but also for the south. The famous orchid grower Ye Zhiqing, in order to save a striped-leaf Cymbidium kanran, used the bagging method for care, and in the end saved it. After rejuvenation, the striped-leaf Cymbidium kanran even took part in an orchid exhibition.

Advantages of putting plastic bags over orchids

1. Raise air humidity and reduce dust pollution. When a potted orchid is bagged, the water vapor evaporating inside the orchid pot is not easily released, so that a microclimate with relatively high air humidity forms inside the bag. Because the air humidity is high, the growing medium in the orchid pot can also remain moist for a longer time, keeping the roots and leaves of the orchid plant often in a moist state. Growing in this suitable environment, the orchid plant has well-developed roots, sturdy seedlings and emerald-green leaf sheaths, loved by all who see them.

2. Newly planted orchid seedlings adapt to the pot quickly and bloom easily. Practice has proved that whether buying wild-collected orchids or introducing artificially cultivated mature seedlings, after purchase and planting there is always a process of recovering and adapting to the pot. With bagging cultivation of orchids, because the small environment conditions are superior, this greatly shortens the pot-adaptation period of the orchid seedlings. Orchid growers in the north generally report that using this method to grow orchids not only lets the orchid seedlings adapt to the pot quickly, but also makes them bloom easily.

3. It helps weak and sickly orchid seedlings rejuvenate. Sickly and weak small orchid seedlings are often as frail as Lin Daiyu, and must never be cultivated roughly.

So, growing orchids with bags over them has many benefits, right! And they can even overwinter safely? So why aren't you taking action right away?
