How to Grow Clivia? A Detailed Guide to Care Techniques and Precautions
How to grow clivia? Many people have grown potted clivia at home; clivia is basically a common potted variety. The market prospects for clivia are good, and it is fairly easy to keep alive, but problems often arise during the growing process. Below, let's take a brief look at clivia cultivation and precautions.
1. Soil Improvement
Clivia is a tropical plant, but at the same time it is very sensitive to heat, and this is something everyone needs to pay attention to during cultivation. Clivia is also not cold-tolerant, so it generally prefers a semi-shaded, semi-humid environment. It needs light, but not direct strong sunlight.
The best soil for planting clivia is sandy soil, and the soil pH is best slightly acidic. When improving the soil, add sufficient organic fertilizer, then carry out careful and thorough cultivation, and finally open furrows and make beds.
2. Seed Treatment
There are currently 5 main varieties of clivia, namely fine-leaved clivia, large-flowered clivia, miraculous clivia, nodding clivia, and stem clivia.
The main methods currently used for planting clivia are division propagation and seed propagation, with seed propagation being the most commonly used. Before sowing, the seeds need to be placed in warm water and soaked for about thirty minutes, then removed and dried. Next, they are placed in sodium phosphate solution and soaked for more than 20 minutes, then removed, and finally placed in clean water and soaked for about 12 hours. After removing them again, they can be sown. The sowing method can be drilling or dibbling, and the distance between each flower seed is generally about 6~8cm.
3. Seedling Management
After the seeds are sown, they generally sprout in about 7~15 days. After clivia sprouts, remember to water it in time, but be careful not to water every day. Usually, water about once every week or so.
About one week after sprouting, also promptly check the growth of the clivia seedlings. If there are missing seedlings, we need to turn over the soil, understand the cause, and then replant the seedlings. When clivia has grown for about one month, it also needs to be watered with organic fertilizer diluted in water.
4. Care Management
When clivia grows 3 or 4 true leaves, it can be transplanted into pots, and flower growers will prepare the pots in advance. During transplanting, the base soil of the clivia is placed into the pot together with it, and after transplanting is completed, remember to water.
In the later growth stage of clivia, the main topdressing is cake fertilizer, fish meal, and bone meal, which is done to improve the vitality of the clivia. At the same time, liquid fertilizer should also be applied as topdressing, but never pour liquid fertilizer onto the clivia leaves. If you want to reasonably control the light exposure of clivia, it is best to build a greenhouse, and building a greenhouse also allows temperature regulation.
5. Precautions
There are actually many points to note when planting clivia. For example, clivia likes a semi-shaded, semi-humid environment and also likes fertilizer, but many flower grower friends will overwater or overfertilize.
Note that clivia generally should not be fertilized with chemical fertilizers. The cultivation process of clivia cannot lack water, but water should not accumulate either. When clivia grows to a certain size, it needs repotting, and the pot size must be able to accommodate the growth of its root system.
