How to Grow Nasturtium from Seed? A Detailed Guide to the Planting Method
Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) is a perennial semi-trailing plant and also a flower with relatively high ornamental value. It can be used to decorate balconies, indoor spaces and more, and is welcomed by many people. Nasturtium also has high medicinal value, with effects such as clearing heat and detoxifying. Its planting area in our country is now very large as well. So how should nasturtium seeds be planted? Below, the editor brings you the planting method for nasturtium seeds. Let's take a look!

1. Sowing Time
The sowing time for nasturtium is determined by seasonal changes, and is generally mainly spring sowing and autumn sowing. Because summer temperatures are relatively high, it is not a growing period for nasturtium. Therefore, for spring sowing, you should sow appropriately early, and start sprouting in February to March. About one month after sprouting, it enters the bud stage. For autumn sowing, it should be done in September to October, and under normal planting, the full bloom period generally occurs in February to March of the following year. Nasturtium sown in different seasons has different characteristics; for example, with spring sowing, nasturtium has large leaves, long stem nodes and high ornamental value.
2. Seed Treatment
If you are growing from seed, it is best to mainly use spring sowing, so that it blooms in summer. Before sowing, we must first soak the seeds to promote sprouting, as this can speed up the rooting of the seeds. The sprouting method for nasturtium is relatively simple: first soak the seeds in warm water for about 24 hours, then remove the seeds, take off the seed coat, wrap them in a wet cloth, and place them at a temperature of about 25°C to promote sprouting. Once you find that the seed has a sprout tip emerging, you can begin sowing.
3. Timely Sowing
Then we need to control the sowing time well. Although growing from seed is suitable for spring sowing, it can also be determined according to your own habits. First prepare the growing soil, then water appropriately so the soil maintains sufficient water content. Then directly scatter the seeds on the soil. If growing in flower pots, keep the sowing amount at about 3 seeds per pot. After sowing, cover with a layer of fine soil, keeping the soil thickness at about 1.5-2 cm. Then do the management work well, water appropriately, and promote the seeds to break through the soil and emerge.
4. Planting Management
Nasturtium should be topdressed about once a month during growth. After each topdressing, do the loosening of the soil well to improve soil permeability and promote root development. Although nasturtium likes water, it is afraid of waterlogging, so the soil moisture should not be too much; keeping it at about 50% is sufficient. When watering during the growing period, mainly use small amounts of water and water more often, and adjust the watering amount according to seasonal changes. In spring and autumn, water about 2-3 times a week, while in summer, water once every day. After entering the flowering period, reduce the watering amount to avoid excessive vegetative growth.
