What to Do If Your Anthurium Is Sunburned

Anthurium, also called flamingo flower, is a perennial ornamental plant. Because its leaves are leathery with a waxy sheen, it is called flamingo flower. Anthurium is most commonly grown in pots, and potted plants can be moved around, but if you accidentally forget about them when outside temperatures are extremely high, a single day of scorching sun can cause sunburn. In most cases of sunburn, there are actually some remedies you can try. Let's take a look at what to do.

1. Preventing Sunburn

If an anthurium shows no yellowing of the leaves, it can generally be grown indoors, with occasional outings to get some sun. Do not put it outside on very sunny days; a sunny spot on a windowsill is usually fine. Good ventilation is essential, and a balcony or a spot under the eaves will both work. But do not expose it to direct sun. On hot, sunny days, generally replenish water and mist the plant; an air humidity of around 65% can protect the leaves.

2. Remedies

If the sunburn is especially severe and the leaves have already dried up, you can cut them off right away and bring the plant indoors. Because there are still leaves that have not dried out, which usually show water-soaked symptoms, it can still recover. Bring it to a shady place, set up a shade net, and mist it every day, several times a day; after some time it may recover, but it takes a while.

3. Encouraging New Leaves

After cutting off the dried parts, you can simply go ahead and encourage new growth by cutting away all the sunburned parts. After cutting, water once every two days, mist daily, and about once every two to three weeks apply a nitrogen fertilizer solution. Then, once it receives some indirect light, new leaves will soon emerge, and once the leaves come out, the growth rate is decent too. Before long, you will have a new plant again.

4. Water Culture

After sunburn, simply remove the soil and wash it in water, cleaning the soil off the roots and the base of the stem, then grow it in clean water for one to two weeks, after which you can use a nutrient solution. Once new leaves grow, cut off all the sunburned leaves. Then continue growing it and change the water regularly. Once the branches and leaves are lush, you can repot it for planting.

After an anthurium is sunburned, what should you do? Generally, you can retain moisture, provide shade, and let it recover on its own; in severe cases, you can cut off the damaged parts. But you can still regrow new branches and leaves. This is good for the plant's growth.
