What causes yellowing leaves on a clivia, and what should be done about it?

What to do when clivia leaves turn yellow

Yellowing of clivia leaves is a common physiological disorder. Different causes produce different symptoms, and the following are the most common:

① Incomplete watering leaves the roots short of water, causing yellowing or drying of the leaf tips. In this case, water thoroughly at once, and thereafter simply keep the potting soil consistently moist.

② Compacted soil with poor aeration, or too much fertilizer, or overwatering, or root rot, can all cause leaves to turn yellow. Here the plant must be repotted: cut away the rotted roots and replant in a loose, fertile, slightly acidic growing mix.

③ Insufficient light. If a clivia is kept for a long time in a shaded spot indoors with no access to light, its leaves will turn yellow. Therefore in summer the clivia should be kept outdoors in a half-shaded, airy place, and in winter grown indoors in a sunny spot. In addition, occasional yellowing of part of an individual leaf may be caused by exposure to cold wind, dry wind, or heat from a fire, and these harmful external factors should be eliminated promptly. When 1~2 outer old leaves of a mature clivia gradually turn yellow, this is a normal metabolic phenomenon.
