How to Deal with Root Rot in Pennywort

Pennywort (Hydrocotyle vulgaris) is one of the common small ornamental plants, and it can be grown in soil or in water. Many people grow it, but quite a few growers notice that their pennywort grows leggy and the leaves start turning yellow, and when they dig it up, they find the roots have already rotted. So what should you do about pennywort root rot? Let's take a look together.

1. Trim the Rotten Roots

When pennywort roots rot, it may be caused by improper fertilizer and water, compacted soil, or pests and diseases, and root rot generally comes with yellowing leaves. At this point, first take the pennywort out of the potting soil and cut away all the rotted roots, so that the remaining roots do not continue to rot, which would cause the whole plant to wither and die.

2. Disinfect and Sterilize

After cutting away all the rotted roots, place the soil in the sun to bake it and kill the pathogens in the soil, and put the plant in a cool, ventilated place to let the wounds heal. It is best to spray the soil and the plant with disinfecting and sterilizing solutions such as carbendazim and bailingqing to protect it from pests and diseases, then replant the plant in the soil. To be on the safe side, after treating the plant, you can simply replace the potting soil entirely, which is even more reliable.

3. Control Fertilizer and Water

If the pennywort root rot was caused by improper fertilizer and water, then you need to control fertilizer and water well. After replanting the plant, water it appropriately, but pay attention to the amount of water; do not use too much at one time. After that, water once every 4 days, and after half a month, if the plant has no other problems, you can fertilize once to encourage the plant to grow new roots and gradually recover.

4. Improve the Environment

Pennywort likes to grow in a shady environment, but after treating root rot, you need to move it to a place with plenty of scattered light and good ventilation. This not only reduces pest and disease problems but also helps it root quickly. Temperatures that are too low can also cause root rot, so if root rot occurs in winter, keep the temperature above 10 degrees after treatment.
