The Best Time and Key Points to Remember When Repotting Azaleas
Azaleas are world-famous ornamental flowering plants, with a great many varieties and a riot of colors. Among them, the red azalea is also known as yingshanhong (mountain glory); when it blooms, whole hillsides turn red, appealing to both refined and popular tastes. For growing at home, pot cultivation is best, and because potted plants are limited by their potting soil, they need to be repotted every so often. So when is the best time to repot an azalea? What should you pay attention to when repotting? Let's take a look.

1. Repotting Time
Azaleas are generally repotted once every two years, otherwise their growth and development will be affected. But each time you repot, you must also choose the right moment; blindly choosing a time to repot may even cause the plant to die. The best time to repot is in spring and autumn, when azaleas are in their peak growing season, and repotting in sunlight gives the highest survival rate.
2. Choosing Potting Soil
Each time you repot an azalea, choose a suitable container according to the size of the plant, so that its roots can spread out better and it can produce more brilliant flowers. For the soil, it is best to prepare it according to the azalea's original root ball soil; you can also mix leaf mold, garden soil, bark and coarse sand to make new potting soil, ensuring good permeability and drainage, so as to prevent water from accumulating at the bottom of the pot and causing root rot. This also lets the roots quickly adapt to the new potting soil, which is good for the azalea's growth.
3. Removing from the Pot and Repotting
First lay the potted plant on its side, press down hard with both feet to separate the soil ball from the pot, trying not to damage the roots, then rinse the roots with clean water. If you find rotten roots, deal with them promptly; just keep the main root system, so that the roots can adapt to the new potting soil as quickly as possible. When repotting, trim off one third of the plant's soil ball, spread a layer of growing medium over the drainage layer, then place the plant in the pot, leaving a gap of about 3 cm between it and the pot wall, then fill the prepared growing medium into the gaps, press gently to firm it, water thoroughly, and place it in semi-shade; after 2 weeks it can be managed normally.
4. Points to Note
Stop watering one or two days before repotting, so the potting soil dries out and becomes slightly compacted. When repotting, at least two thirds of the old soil should be kept with the plant. Before repotting, prune off the azalea's flowers, diseased and weak branches, and dense branches, which greatly reduces the azalea's water transpiration and energy consumption. After repotting, when shading it you should pay attention to keeping it warm and moist; it is recommended to cover it with plastic film, which acts like a greenhouse and helps it recover, take root and sprout faster.
