Azalea Cutting Time and Method

Azalea, also known as yingshanhong, is a fairly common flowering plant in everyday life. It has a long blooming period and high ornamental value, and is deeply loved by people. The most commonly used propagation method for azaleas is cuttings. Mastering the azalea cutting method lets you turn one pot of azaleas at home into many pots, with no need to buy more seedlings at all. So how exactly do you take azalea cuttings? Let's take a look with the editor.

1. Cutting Time

Choosing the right time for cuttings is the key to survival. Azalea cuttings are generally taken in late spring and early summer, but because there are so many varieties, the chosen time also varies. Even when cuttings are taken at the same point in time, the time at which they sprout new shoots differs. Overall, however, the more suitable times are late spring and early summer. Generally, Western azaleas are cut in late May, spring azaleas generally in early June, and East azaleas and summer azaleas generally in mid-June.

2. Cutting Preparation

Selecting the cutting is the first step. Generally, choose a robust plant with good growth and no pests or diseases as the mother plant, then select some well-growing semi-mature branches from the outer part near the top as cuttings. It is best to take cuttings on a cloudy day. Keep only about 3 leaves at the top; the rest of the leaves can be trimmed off. The cutting should be about 10 cm long. The bottom cut is best made at a slant just below a node. If the leaves are too long, we can also cut them in half. Place the cut end of the trimmed branch about 5 cm into a diluted rooting powder solution and soak for about 1 hour.

3. Cutting Method

You can use river sand as the cutting medium, or mix river sand and peat soil at a 1:1 ratio as the cutting medium, which also works very well. First prepare a bamboo stick about the same size as the cutting, poke holes in the cutting medium, then place the cutting into the hole, and press the surrounding medium firm with your fingers. Finally, water thoroughly and place it in a cool, ventilated spot. In low-temperature, low-humidity conditions, be sure to cover it with a plastic bag to keep it warm and moist, which helps it survive.

4. Later Management

Half a month after cutting, you can see that the cutting has returned to a normal leaf color state. At this point you can place it in a spot with plenty of light for care, but be careful to avoid direct sunlight. A month and a half after cutting, new roots will have grown. At this point remove the covering film and ensure air circulation. After another month the root system will have grown very well, and then it can be potted up.
