What to Do When Your Monstera Deliciosa Falls Over

Monstera deliciosa belongs to the Araceae family. Because its large leaves resemble a turtle's shell, it is called "turtle-back bamboo" (Monstera deliciosa). It is mainly cultivated as an ornamental plant in the tropical regions of China. The growth characteristics of Monstera deliciosa are thick stems and aerial roots; it is a shade-tolerant plant. Many people grow Monstera deliciosa at home, and after planting it, they sometimes find that although it had been growing well, it suddenly falls over. So what should be done about this? Below, we will teach everyone how to rescue a fallen Monstera deliciosa.

1. Pruning

Monstera deliciosa has relatively long stems and relatively large leaves. It grows tall, with multiple stems growing in a scattered manner, so if you are not careful, it easily falls over. When you first start growing it, you should pay attention to reasonably separating the branches and to the angles between the branches. You can use string around the stems and tie a loop, not too tight, but a bit tighter than the original angle. Identify the main branches, about 5 of them, and the other new shoots can be removed. New branches on the branches can be appropriately retained, and old branches can also be renewed. In this way, growth vigor is maintained.

2. Fertilizing

Falling over is mainly because the stems lack strength, so they easily fall over. This may be due to a lack of nutrients, or a lack of potassium and phosphorus. It may also be whether too much nitrogen fertilizer has been applied, causing excessive leggy growth so that the roots and stems cannot support it and it falls over. Therefore, the amount of nitrogen fertilizer applied must be controlled. Pay attention to using compound fertilizer and regularly supplement potassium fertilizer and phosphorus fertilizer, especially when it has just been planted and the stems are tender, timely supplementation is needed. In ordinary cultivation, some plant ash can be applied to the soil, which can also prevent the soil from being too wet.

3. Water

If there is too much water in the soil and the humidity is too high, the soil easily loosens and cannot support the root system. The stems find it difficult to maintain upright growth, so abnormal growth at the base easily occurs, and it gradually bends and falls over. So in fact, since Monstera deliciosa is shade-tolerant and kept indoors for a long time, it will not be too short of water, so there is no need to water it every day. Watering about once every 5 days or so is enough. If the plant is especially tall, then water less. If too much water has been given, you can move it outdoors for a while.

4. Light

Plant growth requires light to grow robustly. Although it is shade-tolerant, it still cannot never be moved outside to receive light. You must pay attention to giving it appropriate light, which is beneficial to the branches and leaves, the stems, and the entire growth. So you can put it outside for a day or two every one or two weeks. Usually, place it near a window as much as possible, in a place with light.

Generally, the falling over of Monstera deliciosa is a phenomenon caused by the external environment not meeting its growth needs. Therefore, cultivation and management must be meticulous, and when Monstera deliciosa is young and small, management should be especially emphasized. In this way, Monstera deliciosa falling over can be prevented.
