What are the tips for growing peonies

The peony is a plant of the genus Paeonia, so it looks very similar to the Chinese peony. It is a perennial plant, and what is rather special is that the underside of its leaves is covered with a white powder. This flower has always been a symbol of elegance and nobility. The peony is not an easy flower to cultivate; it is a flower that requires rather particular planting. Historical records state that it must be planted neither too deep nor too shallow, and that it needs new soil, planted after disinfection. The planting depth should only reach the root crown. So what are the tips for growing peonies today? Let us take a look together.

1. Temperature

Peonies like a cool environment, are not tolerant of cold, and are not tolerant of heat either. They simply dislike both cold and heat. Moderate temperatures are most suitable for peony growth. In particular, during the flowering period, if the temperature is not sufficient, they will not bloom, but if the temperature is too high, it will also affect the flowering time, making them prone to withering and fading very quickly. Generally, high temperatures are inevitably accompanied by drought, and drought affects plant growth, so high temperatures are very dangerous for peonies. It is best to move them indoors during hot weather, or to grow them under a corridor with a shade net set up.

2. Water

After peonies bloom, water is a necessary factor for maintaining vitality. Lack of water and drought will cause the flowers to wither and lose water, and finally drop off. Or the flower edges may wither and change color, showing a scorched condition. When facing a possible water shortage, you must also ensure the plant does not lack water and that the roots can absorb it, watering in the afternoon or in the morning. You should also spray the leaves and flowers more to keep them moist, as absorption is more noticeable. However, peony roots are fragile, so the soil must not be too wet.

3. Light

Peony growth, flowering and development require sufficient sunlight, but they cannot accept strong light and cannot adapt to it. Strong light will raise the ambient temperature and make the plant's temperature higher. Peonies are afraid of heat, and also afraid that direct sunlight will scorch the branches and leaves. So they can be potted and placed in a spot with light, but they do not like a hot environment. During the flowering period they may need a bit more light, while at other times they can tolerate a bit more shade.

4. Nutrition

Base fertilizer is fundamental. It is best to use farmyard manure such as compost, stable manure and cake fertilizer, and to use chemical fertilizers sparingly. They quite like fertilizer during growth, and generally need to be fertilized about 2 times a month. But the main thing is to apply the leachate of farmyard manure, as it is easier to absorb. During the flowering period, fertilize more to nourish the stems and leaves. One thing to note is to earth up the soil in winter to keep it warm.

5. Soil

It is best to choose soil that has never been used to grow peonies, because soil that has been used will inevitably accumulate some pathogens and some rotting roots. After planting, it is easy for the roots to rot and for disease to occur. The planting site must be in a place that will absolutely never accumulate water. The soil should be loose and breathable, and the soil layer does not need to be too deep.

The trick to growing peonies is to pay attention to how to provide the best growing environment for peony growth, so that the peonies can be kept growing relatively well. This counts as some basic knowledge for cultivation, and there are also some small details.
