Broccoli Seedling Cultivation Techniques and Key Points Explained
1. Seedling Growth Environment Requirements
Broccoli prefers a cool environment and is a semi-cold-tolerant crop. Its seeds have a minimum germination temperature of 3°C, an optimal temperature of 20-25°C, and a maximum of 35°C. Flower bud differentiation does not have strict low-temperature requirements; early-maturing varieties can undergo flower bud differentiation as long as the average temperature is below 20°C. However, during the seedling stage, it must not be exposed to low temperatures, otherwise small flower heads will form, causing it to lose commercial value. Early and late-maturing varieties have lower temperature requirements for flower bud differentiation and should not be cultivated in high-temperature seasons to avoid forming fuzzy flower heads, so the sowing period is extremely important.
2. Preparing the Seedbed
The seedbed should be chosen on soil that is high and dry, well-drained, well-aerated, and rich in organic matter, and where cruciferous crops have not been planted within two years to avoid worsening disease severity. The seedbed soil should be tilled 7-10 days before sowing, then 25 kg of compound fertilizer per mu should be applied as base fertilizer, and beds should be made. The seedbed must undergo strict disinfection measures; Ridomil and Lorsban can be used to spray the seedbed thoroughly to disinfect and sterilize as well as kill underground pests. In addition, to prevent seedlings from being harmed by weeds, herbicides can be sprayed, and the seedbed should be watered thoroughly.
3. Sowing
The appropriate sowing time should be selected according to the local climate, variety characteristics, and cultivation purpose. Generally, early-maturing varieties are sown in August, mid-maturing varieties in August-September, and late-maturing varieties in September-October. Since broccoli seeds are relatively small, sowing density should be well controlled to give seedlings sufficient growing space, with a general sowing rate of 12-20 grams per mu. Sowing must be uniform; the common method is direct seeding with sand and mud mixed with seeds, evenly broadcasting the seeds onto the seedbed. After sowing, generally no soil covering is needed; just spray water so the seeds and soil are in close contact.
4. Seedbed Management
The most critical part of broccoli cultivation techniques is seedbed management. Broccoli sowing and seedling emergence generally require 2-3 days, which is relatively short, so management requirements are higher. During the germination period, inspect once each in the morning, noon, and evening to observe the sprouting condition of the seeds, the moisture level of the soil, and the sunlight intensity. During the rainy season, drain water promptly to prevent seed rot. During high-temperature periods, regulate soil temperature by watering to keep it between 25-30°C to facilitate seed emergence. Watering is best done before noon and in the evening. During periods of strong light, cover with shade netting as much as possible to reduce temperature and protect from rain; once the cotyledons unfold, remove the shade netting promptly.
