Causes and Solutions for Anthurium Not Blooming

Anthurium is named fire crane flower and flamingo flower because of its fiery red, waxy blooms paired with bright yellow spadices, and it also carries excellent symbolic meaning, so many households keep a pot for ornamental enjoyment. But many people run into a problem when growing it: the anthurium only grows leaves and does not bloom. What is going on here? Let's take a look.

1. Insufficient light

The inflorescence of the anthurium forms in the axil of each leaf, which requires the number of flowers to match the number of leaves. If there is a large difference, then light is the factor. If there is too little light, under the influence of photosynthesis the plant itself produces relatively few assimilates, there are fewer leaves, and therefore fewer flowers.

Solution: In spring, autumn and winter it can be placed in a spot with ample light, while in summer the temperature is higher and the sunlight is stronger, so strong direct sunlight should be avoided to prevent sunscald from excessive exposure.

2. Insufficient fertilizer

Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are the three most important elements needed for plant growth. For a plant to bloom normally, phosphorus fertilizer is essential; a lack of phosphorus will cause it not to bloom. If nitrogen fertilizer is applied excessively, the leaves will grow wildly, resulting in the phenomenon of only leaves growing and no flowers.

Solution: When fertilizing the anthurium, try to choose a multi-element mixed fertilizer based mainly on phosphorus and potassium. When buying fertilizer, the packaging has a table of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and trace element content; choose the one with the highest phosphorus and potassium content. This is a multi-element mixed fertilizer based mainly on phosphorus and potassium. Using this fertilizer on the anthurium can achieve the effect of one leaf and one flower.

3. Soil too alkaline

Long-term application of chemical fertilizers to the potting soil, or not repotting and changing the soil for a long time, will make the soil too alkaline, which is unfavorable for plant growth and development and is also one of the causes of the anthurium not blooming.

Solution: For potted growers, it is advisable to tip out the pot every spring and autumn, change to new soil, move it into a pot one size larger, and use peat soil, perlite and vermiculite mixed at 3:1:1. Trim the roots a little to encourage more new roots and avoid the soil becoming too alkaline.

4. Unsuitable temperature and humidity

The suitable temperature for anthurium is between 25-30 degrees; it can withstand a maximum high temperature of 35 degrees and a minimum low temperature of 14 degrees. Once the temperature is too high or too low, its growth will stop, which is also one of the causes of it not blooming.

Solution: In the hot summer season, spray promptly to maintain moisture, requiring humidity between 70%-80%. In spring and autumn the temperature is lower and the humidity is higher, which easily induces farmers; attention should be paid to keeping warm and protecting against cold.
