What are the taboos of fertilizing vegetables

To achieve high vegetable yields, fertilization is essential. But fertilization cannot be done carelessly; there are certain taboos we need to pay attention to. So what issues should be noted when fertilizing vegetables?

1. Do not apply ammonium nitrate to leafy vegetables

Pak choi, Chinese cabbage, amaranth, celery, cabbage, etc. easily absorb nitrate nitrogen fertilizer during the growing period. If ammonium nitrate is applied, leafy vegetables will absorb nitrate ions, and after people eat them, the nitrate ions will enter the human body, causing cumulative poisoning in the body.

2. Do not water vegetables after applying urea

The nitrogen component contained in urea is amide nitrogen. Amide nitrogen can only be absorbed and utilized by vegetable roots after being converted into ammonium carbonate or ammonium bicarbonate under the action of urease secreted by soil microorganisms. If urea is watered immediately after application or encounters rain, the amide nitrogen will be lost. Therefore, whether urea is used as a base fertilizer or a top dressing for vegetables, it should be applied 5-6 days before watering, so that it is fully converted before watering, to avoid losses.

3. Do not apply ammonium bicarbonate when the vegetable field is short of water

Ammonium bicarbonate has extremely unstable chemical properties and is prone to volatilization. When applying ammonium bicarbonate in vegetable fields, whether as a base fertilizer or a top dressing, it should be applied deeply when the vegetable field is moist, and the soil should be covered immediately after application. If the weather is dry and ammonium bicarbonate must be applied, it can be diluted with water and sprinkled, or watered after application.

4. Do not spray high-concentration nitrogen fertilizer on leafy vegetables

If urea, ammonium sulfate, etc. are used for foliar spraying of vegetables, although it can make vegetable leaves plump and green with good color, the content of harmful salts in green leafy vegetables will increase significantly, which will then affect the health of consumers.

5. Do not use high-concentration ammonium nitrogen fertilizer in greenhouses

Because the temperature inside a greenhouse is relatively high and the humidity is relatively high, under suitable temperature and humidity conditions, high-concentration ammonium nitrogen fertilizer is easily decomposed under the action of soil enzymes, and finally converted into ammonia gas, which will lead to ammonia poisoning in vegetables and affect the quality and yield of vegetables.
